Default "Straight Edge": Music or Lifestyle?

The Straight Edge or simply abbreviated the "sXe" of "sXe" is coined a subculture to represent a particular lifestyle. It advocates abstinence from tobacco, alcohol, and recreational drug use-especially psychoactive and stimulant drug use. Some straight edger’s also abstain from promiscuous sexual behavior and caffeine. Although straight edger’s do not necessarily identify with a particular world view on social or political issues, many do subscribe to precepts associated with anarchism, vegetarianism–veganism, socialism, environmentalism, and the deep ecology movement.

Straight Edge is a lifestyle first and foremost, mainly associated with the hardcore punk scene which goes along the "no drink, no drugs" rule and sometimes "no sex outside marriage".

The X's came about when bands like Minor Threat played all ages shows and anyone under the legal drinking age had an X stamped on their hands to show the barstaff the wern't to serve them beer.

I find a lot of kids now don't have a clue what true straight edge means, putting xs ojn their hands while chugging a bottle of beer... They have no education to their history and they reckon they do... Pitiful.

Personally, I am a drinker, I like a beer or ten, sometimes I take time off beer to clean myself out and I do have the utmost respect for anyone who

a) are straight edge
and (this is important)
b) Don't preach to me about the lifestyle.

there are five major bands attributed to the popularization of the straight edge life style(these bands being most popular in the mid to late 80's, to early 90's)...minor threat, 7 seconds, SSD, uniform choice and cause for alarm, these bands are all solid, and all followed the sXe, i just find it contradicting to the ideology of "punk", when i hear punk i think do what you want and don't give a f**k when doing it/do the opposite of the crowd....but this sXe sh*t makes punk(i hate using the word punk) seem well...pu**y

But if you don't want to drink because you don't want to drink, isn't that "going against the crowd" and therefore the whole ethos of punk rock?

I agree that if you choose to be straight edge, go for it and enjoy, it's your decision. The entire straight edge scene, just like the majority of all other scenes, has become watered down to the point where a lot of the people in them have no clue as to what the true meaning of it was.

And, straight edge just seems too boring. Youth is all about experimenting with many aspects of life to become well-rounded and knowledgable. I am not encouraging people to go have sex with whomever they please, nor am I promoting drug and/or alcohol abuse, but just for people to do whatever they want and implement their experiences into their overall persona to become a better person.
