Salzburg! We went there many times--and have happy memories of each one! It is a lovely city/area, with much to see and do.

Paris is incomparable! Of course, everyone loves Paris. So I had decided: "I will NOT like Paris!" But I arrived and fell in love with it, just like everyone else!

Oh, Miss Daisy, there is something I want to warn you about. One time I entered a store that I didn't know what it was. When I got inside, I was surrounded by pornography and other unmentionable things! I actually had a panic attack--I couldn't breathe or move because I was in shock. So . . . don't be so bold like me and enter a store that may look questionable!! Well, it seems funny now, because I was so innocent and had never seen anything like that. But I was embarrassed, humiliated, ashamed, shocked, and even scared, when finally I could make my legs move to get OUT of that store!! This was true in Germany and a few other countries years ago--Tahira, are those shops still around in the general city communities? If so, help Miss Daisy to be able to identify them. I know for a certainty she does not want to see what I had to see--and I was a married woman with children!!

I really want to go to Paris! Hope it works out well

Oh, thanks for the warning!! I'll try not to enter a store that looks fishy, or even a one where I can't see what's going on from the outside!

Miss Daisy, this is a very good question. My daughter has an auto-immune illness called "Lupus" (SLE - or Systemic Lupus Erythematosus). In her particular case, an allergy to pork can trigger the terrible symptoms of this illness. In the U.S., the product "Jell-O" and some other gelatins have pork in them. Many food products in the U.S. have pork in them, and it is called by several different names. It is important that you get this information. If you have difficulty finding the words in German, please let me know. I will find out from my daughter what the English words are, then maybe somehow here at ATL or online, you can get them translated into German.

Miss daisy I think you mean something like Gelatine. Things which are made out by extractes of pork.
There are not many of them. Since there were some heavy deseases they try to make all those jelly things from a vegetal basis. Just the sausage and "meat in aspik" things are made by jelly of pork or beef.

All other things like jelly bears or jelly bellys, jelly on top of cakes are made on a vegetal basis.

I´ll be back in the evening (I have to hurry to work now)
    because of Salzburg, Paris.

Sex Shopy are not many of them in the city; and you can see it clearly from outside that these are shops with this certain "goods". YOu won´t stumble in "by chance"

Do you mean Obersdorf or ObersTdorf ?
    Obersdorf is in Austria,

ObersTdorf is in Germany, but not very close to Salzburg. But ObersTdorf can be reached easily and in a short time from Ulm.
I have been to Oberstdorf for a day-trip 2 years ago. Its very cosy there and very nice, and typical bavarian
    http://www.oberstdorf.de/

You should take a chairlist to go on the top of a mountain. Its lovely and you#ll have a great overview over a part of the alps. If the weahter is nice, you can see the Lake Constance (Bodensee).
At Oberstdorf there is a place, where you can take a chairlift to the top and go down with a roller coaster.

Salzburg: In Salzburg there have many many carriages (with horses). 6-8 person can make a sightseeing tour with this. It cost about 80 Euro. So you should share the fee. As far as I know, no bargaining possible, but if you are 8 nice young ladies..... try!
    http://www.salzburg.info/en
If you are there you should eat some typical austrian sweet. Like "Nockerl"
Its made of eggs, sugar, flower

    or Apfelstrudel:
    http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apfelstrudel
Its a pastry almost similar to the pastry of Baklava, filled with apples, nuts and raisins. YOu eat it most of the times warm with some vanilla sauce/sip.

Paris: I have been 2 times in Paris many years ago, but I loved Paris a lot. I think the mood of this city is many mediterranean. Many arabs live there. A lot of sightseeing places, easily to reach with the Metro (subway).

I knwo for sure that there are quick connections by railway between Munich and Paris. A friend of mine did a weekendtrip that way. I guess it takes 6-7 hours by train and I think the ticket was about 180 Euro rountrip (? to Paris and back). I guess you will have about the soame offers from Ulm.

Guess I was plain stupid to wander into one--I think it was at an airport! You get the picture--stupid American . . . :S
Because I wasn't used to them, it seemed they were in every large city (1980s)! :S :l

They are in every large city. But know they are more obviously. You see it in the windows (Display) the certain kind of high heel boots or clothes on a display dummy. In the 80ies it was more "hidden".

About Muenchen, Germany to Paris, France, yes, Tahira is right. I did not remember the ride being so long, but we were near Aschaffenburg, Germany. However, it's a longer ride than I remembered--you'd catch your connecting train at Mannheim, then on to Paris. With about 15 minutes or so between trains, that would take 6+ hours. The trains are so wonderful, you won't mind. Take a great book and also watch the scenery and take photos! Here is a site for checking European rail travel:

    http://www.raileurope.com/index.html...5b73cslWHXzfy2

It's actually a long url; hope it connects okay.

The trains usually do not delay. They are on time. However, that means you must also be ready for your train exactly when it arrives; very little time is allowed to load passengers.

Back in the 1980's there used to be a particular part of the train you where you needed to board. One time we boarded a train at the wrong section . . . and our section got left at a city along the way, disconnected from the rest of the train! Tahira, is this still done? And how can Miss Daisy be sure to get to the correct section of the train if that is still so?

Hi Frankie-Jasmine, I know that there are still ong trains, and some of the waggons are disconnected after a certain part of the way. Usually its written outside of the waggon, and you can always ask the conductor at the station before leaving or inside the train when they come and ask for your ticket.

PAris-Munich ist a direct connection as far as I know a cooperation between ICE (Intercity and the french TGV). So you do not have to change the trains in a certain city. I have asked "My friend google" and I found a direct daily connection even starting from Ulm

If this link doesn´t work, try this one http://www.bahn.de/p/view/angebot/in...ce-paris.shtml

If you are in Ulm, you can find out more details when asking at the centrail railway station.

Weather is quite hot and humid but it will be a little bit "colder" untill monday. They say it will be about 24°C. That´s perfect!
It will be sunny, but you can also have some rain, thunder and lightning.

I can't believe your departure is almost here! Miss Daisy, please write once you're back home and settled, to let us know your experiences. That will be so interesting for me!! Yes, dear, have a wonderful, joyous visit. Enjoy both nature and the cities. Relax and know that you will find other Muslims wherever you go! I would think that would be reassuring! And I'm sure you will have a nice experience. Although German sounds harsh, it does not mean that the people are harsh If you are polite and kind with them, they will overall be with you, too, and many will try to help you (especially in southern Germany). I am SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!!!! I thank you, Tahira, and others for making this such an interesting thread. I have really enjoyed it. <3

Oh Tahira, weiß Du daß mein Austauschstudent aus Ulmer Gegend kommt? Der ist aus Pfaffenhofen a. d. Roth, Landkreis Neu-Ulm, Bezirk Schwaben. Kennst Du dieses Dorf?
