    Default Wonders of Nature

This is a thread dedicated to our nature's homeland. You can post pictures and tell us in few words about them in general.

You can post pictures of nature's homeland, or in other country that you would like to share with us.

I think it would be really interesting....

theres toooo many wonders of nature in my beautiful homeland... Mexico... but I want to start share with you guys, one nature from where I'm living now...

In geology, a blowhole is a cavity located at the end of a sea cave which exits above the cave. When a wave enters the mouth of the cave it will be funneled up towards the blowhole, which can result in quite spectacular blasts of water from the top of the blowhole if the geometry of the cave and blowhole and state of the weather are appropriate.

The Blowhole.. La Bufadora is the second-largest of three known major marine geysers in the world.

The grey whale's annual migration from Alaska to the lagoons of Baja California Sur between the months of December and March, and back in the months of April and May, can be seen from the coast of Ensenada.

p.s. the 2 pic are mine... im the one with the black purse... i was getting all wet

Webshots doesn't work for images here??!!?? Grrrrr..... I've got tons of photos on webshots. Well, guess I'll just use thumbnails again, for now...

    I love my mountains!

Great Smoky Mountains, North Carolina (and Tennessee)

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park receives 8-10 million visitors every year. They're not very tall mountains (+/- 2,000 meters) ... because they're among the very oldest mountains in the world. They have been worn low and smooth by several millennia of weather and glacial activity, so they're not spectacular like the Rockies, Alps or Himalayans.

But they're beautiful! And acre for acre, they are the most fertile mountains in the world. There are:

... 100 different types of trees
... 1500 types of flowering plants
... 200 types of birds, 66 mammals, 50 native fish, 39 types of reptiles, 43 amphibians

More than 10,000 separate species of plants and animals have been documented. Scientists think there are a lot more; maybe as many as 100,000 different forms of life in the "Smokies".

The United Nations has declared the Great Smoky Mountains to be an "International Biosphere Preserve".

Most of all, they're just plain beautiful!!

Default Greenbrier Creek, Great Smoky Mountains, TN/NC, USA

I'll try again with inline images. This scene is in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina & Tennessee. It's my avatar in full size.

I took this photo last September, only 10 minutes from a tourist mecca (Gatlinburg TN). But is so far removed from all the heat and noise and business .....

For me, sometimes the "wonder of nature" is simply to be completely surrounded by the peacefulness of its unspoiled beauty.

Some of your Croatia makes me think of my NC. The green mountains, bird in a tree above the water.... and we also have very nice islands, the Outer Banks, but not as dazzling as your scenes. I wanta visit Croatia! Maybe by ship, from Venice/Venezia Italy or somewhere like that

    Absolutely WONDERFUL pictures!!!!

Zahra, I would like to see that geyser with my own eyes.... maybe someday...!

Croatia.... left me speechless.... And I'm so close to it that I may have just discovered the next holiday destination

Jandros, thank you so much for all the pictures but especially for the one in your avatar. So many times I felt sorry I can't just click on your avatar to see the picture properly !!

I'll have to make a selection from my personal pictures to post here and that may take some time.

But till then, since Zahra said we can post pictures from other countries as well, let me show you a place I've just been to a few weeks ago:

    Balos-Gramvousa, island of Crete, Greece

Well now I'm even more glad that I posted it! I softened the avatar just a little bit, for effect, but I left the contrast (shadows) in the original photo.

Crete!!! oooooh-my-gosh ...... when I lived/worked in Turkey, I would call Iraklion 1-2 times a month to test a NATO secure-voice system. It was always neat, just speaking to someone there.

If I were rich, and if I had a 60-foot yacht and 6 months' supply of food ... I have developed an itinerary ... but I'm going to post it in the "Countries You'd like to Visit" topic.

In the meantime, here's a little something that I'm going to dream about, part of an ideal southeast Europe coastal itinerary:

I didn't have time to make a selection of my personal pictures, but I remembered that these days a Romanian newspaper has a campaign of establishing the Seven Wonders of Nature from Romania.

I'll attach a few pictures of some of the places we call natural wonders:
    (pictures taken from www.evz.ro)

    The Sphynx

    The Muddy Volcanoes:

Bucura lake, the widest glacial lake in Romania

Fagaras Mountains, the so-called Transylvanian Alps:

Such incredible beauty.....who says God does not exist?!

These natural wonders could not possibly have created themselves, at least not IMHO. I feel like heading to the airport right now!!!!!!!
