Default Alfred J Kwak - German to English

Hi. I'd like these lyrics to the theme tune of Alfred J Kwak translated from German.

Could you also explain the use of the word 'mal' in these lyrics and the placement of 'er' in "dann schwimmt, dann taucht er und dann plust"?

Thanks in advance.

so fröhlich, so fröhlich
bin ausgesprochen fröhlich
so fröhlich war ich nie.
Ich war schon öfter fröhlich
ganz fröhlich, ganz fröhlich
doch so verblüffend fröhlich
war ich bis heut’ noch nie.

Ich bin auch schon mal traurig
so abgrundtief traurig
dann bin ich schaurig traurig
dann tut mir alles weh.
Bin manchmal leicht neurotisch,
psychotisch und chaotisch,
labil und neogotisch
doch heut’ bin ich OK.

Bin ich deshalb so fröhlich
so fröhlich, so fröhlich
fast übertrieben fröhlich
so fröhlich war ich nie.
Ich bin auch nicht entschlossen
kein bisschen verschossen
ich bin auch nicht verdrossen
das ist mir anzusehn’.

Heut’ bin ich ganz gelassen
erstaunlich gelassen
ich kann es gar nicht fassen
ich kann es nicht verstehn.
Bald bin ich nicht mehr fröhlich
so fröhlich, so fröhlich
bald bin ich nicht mehr fröhlich
dann bin ich tot. Normal.

Hey there, no guarantees my native language is Dutch . I should tell you that this song comes originally from The Netherlands, it's a very famous tune of dutch cartoon that goes about Alfred J. Kwak, wich is a duck . Have fun with it! If you have more, i am ready to translate! Take care!

Er fliegt, er watschelt und er schwimmt
He flies, he totters and he swims
er quackt für sie und er quackt für dich
He chatters for U and he chatters for you
er schnattert auch mal nur für sich
He cackles also sometimes for hisself
und wenn du ein Liedchen singst
And when you sing a song
dann schwimmt, dann taucht er und dann plust
Then he swims, he dives and then he "splashes"
er auch für uns
He also for us
Plätscher plätscher Feder Wasser mag doch jeder
Splash splash, nevertheless fetter water likes everybody
geh schon mal nach Haus
Go already home
er kommt ein Tröpfchen später
He comes one raindrop later
Plätscher plätscher Feder Wasser mag doch jeder
Splash splash, nevertheless fetter water likes everybody
geh schon mal nach Haus
Go already home
er kommt ein Tröpfchen spatter
He comes one raindrop later
Lal-la la-la lala la, lala-lal-a lala la-la ...
Lal-la la-la lala la, lalala-lala la-la ...
Plätscher plätscher Feder Wasser mag doch jeder
Splash splash, nevertheless fetter water likes everybody
geh schon mal nach Haus
Go already home
Plätscher plätscher Feder Wasser mag doch jeder
Splash splash, nevertheless fetter water likes everybody
geh schon mal nach Haus
Go already home

Warum bin ich so fröhlich
Why I am so happy
so fröhlich, so fröhlich
So happy, so happy
bin ausgesprochen fröhlich
So totally happy
so fröhlich war ich nie
So happy I have never been
Ich war schon öfter fröhlich
More ofter I was happy
ganz fröhlich, ganz fröhlich
Totally happy, totally happy
doch so verblüffend fröhlich
But so astonishing happy
war ich bis heut’ noch nie.
I have never been till today

Ich bin auch schon mal traurig
There are times I am unhappy
so abgrundtief traurig
So appalling unhappy
dann bin ich schaurig traurig
Then am I gruesome unhappy
dann tut mir alles weh.
Then everything inside me hurts
Bin manchmal leicht neurotisch,
Sometimes I am a bit neurotic
psychotisch und chaotisch,
Psychotic and chaotic
labil und neogotisch
Unstable and neogotic
doch heut’ bin ich OK.
But today i am ok

Bin ich deshalb so fröhlich
Is that the reason I am so happy
so fröhlich, so fröhlich
So happy, so happy
fast übertrieben fröhlich
Almost exaggerated happy
so fröhlich war ich nie.
So happy I have never been
Ich bin auch nicht entschlossen
I am also not decisive
kein bisschen verschossen
Not a little bit crazy
ich bin auch nicht verdrossen
I am also not annoyed
das ist mir anzusehn’.
Which you can see

Heut’ bin ich ganz gelassen
Today i am totally calm
erstaunlich gelassen
Amazing calm
ich kann es gar nicht fassen
I almost can not believe
ich kann es nicht verstehn.
I can not understand
Bald bin ich nicht mehr fröhlich
Soon I am not happy anymore
so fröhlich, so fröhlich
So happy, so happy
bald bin ich nicht mehr fröhlich
Soon I am not happy anymore
dann bin ich tot. Normal.
Then I’m totally normal again.

"Er" means "He" in english. So it means that "He siwms, then he dives..." As you can see in the translation above .

If you translate the word "mal" into English it would be "time". So if you say in German. "Ich hab das einmal gemacht". The it would be in English "I have done that ones".

If things are not clear to you, just ask! Take care!

Hi Marco and Alfred,
I saw Alfred request in the morning but I couldn´t Answer that quickly. But I took the time to listen to the song in youtube, the german and the durch version. I guess, the singer and songwriter is Hermann Van Veen (from the Netherlands). Indeed in both version he sings ..." dann pulst er auch für uns"... The word "pulst" does not exist in german language, but I though maybe he mewante to say ".. dann PLUSTERTER er sich auch für uns"... PLUSTERN is a thing which birds do and means TO FLUFF UP = it´s when the bird makes itself bigger by spreading the wings only a little bit.

ANd I am glad for you translation for the last sentence:

bald bin ich nicht mehr fröhlich
Soon I am not happy anymore
dann bin ich tot. Normal.
Then I’m totally normal again.

If you do it word by word it would be:... then I am dead. Normal

And I was really confused about htis sentence in a song for children. We have this cartoon also here in Germany.

Marco, I think it was the best thing that you as a dutch person, translated it into english. Thank you

Regards Tahira

Hey Tahira, thanks for your reply . The last sentence "dann bin ich tot. Normal." Could mean two thing in my opinion. Tot. which is a abbreviation of totaal. Or "tot", "dead", which could be translated in dutch as "dood normaal", which means that something or someone, is totally normal. It's seems an easy text to translate but it isn't. I know the dutch lyrics very well, i did my best . I hope that you enjoy it Alfred.

Thanks Tahira for your explanation, very kind of you!

Thanks for your quick replies. Thanks for the translation, Marco.

Are all the German lyrics grammatically correct?

The reason I asked about "dann schwimmt, dann taucht er und dann plust" is that 'er' appears after only one verb. Is it correct to say "dann schwimmt, dann er taucht" too? What about "dann er schwimmt, dann er taucht" or "dann schwimmt er, dann taucht er" or "dann er schwimmt, dann taucht er".

What is the difference between "ich bin" and "bin ich" in a sentence that is not a question?

Thank you for your time.

It is grammatically correct to say: dann schwimmt er, dann taucht er.... and so on, all other suggestion you gave us are wrong.

Ich bin means: I AM.
Bin ich means: AM I...? You you it in a question;
for example: Bin ich allein? AM I ALONE?

or fur using the past:
danach BIN ICH gegangen - after that I HAVE BEEN GOING

All other things have been grammatically right; oh, one thing I recognized in the text:

Plätscher plätscher Feder Wasser mag doch jeder
Splash splash, nevertheless fetter water likes everybody

FEDER means: FEATHER
not fetter; fetter is MORE FAT

Alfred, where are you from and how did you come across this song?

Regards Tahira

Thanks, Tahira.

I'm from England. I watched Alfred J Kwak when it was shown here in the 90s. Like you, I've seen the different versions of the theme tune on YouTube.

I found a translation for the Dutch version on another site, posted by Anarchistica: http://cyclingcolours.nl/forum/viewtopic.php?p=257180

Here it is...

Spetter pieter pater
Drip drop drap

Hij vliegt hij waggelt en hij zwemt
He flies, he waddles and he swims
Hij kwekt voor jouw en hij kwakt voor haar
He quacks for you and he quacks for her
Hij snatert heel wat bij elkaar
He makes a big fuss [with his quacking]
En als jij een liedje voor hem zingt
And if you sing him a song
Dan plonst dan duikt ie en dan zwemt
He'll plunge, he'll dive and he'll swim
Hij wat voor hem
some for him [not sure what Herman van Veen meant here]

Spetter pieter pater
Drip drop drap
Lekker in het water
So nice in the water
Ga maar vast naar huis
Go home already
Hij komt een druppel later
He'll drop by a bit later [woo @ use of drop]

Zo vrolijk
So happy

Ik ben vandaag zo vrolijk
I'm so happy today
zo vrolijk zo vrolijk
So happy, so happy
Ik ben behoorlijk vrolijk
I'm very happy
zo vrolijk was ik nooit
Like i never was before [lit: i've never been so happy]

Ik was wel vaker vrolijk
I've happy lots of times
heel vrolijk, heel vrolijk
Very happy, very happy
maar zo behoorlijk vrolijk
But so very happy
was ik tot nog toe nooit
I've never been before

Soms ben ik ongelukkig
Sometimes i'm unhappy
ontzettend ongelukkig
Very unhappy
Soms ben ik ongelukkig
Sometimes I'm unhappy
dan sterf ik van verdriet (?? that I die in unhappyness??)
Then i die out of grief

Soms ben ik wat neurotisch
Sometimes I'm a bit neurotic
psychotisch en chaotisch
Psychotic and chaotic
labiel en neogotisch
Unstable and neogothic [Alfred was a goth avant la lettre? <img src="./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="" />]
maar vandaag dus niet
But, obviously, not today

Soms ben ik wat neurotisch
Sometimes i'm a bit neurotic
psychotisch en chaotisch
Psychotic and chaotic
labiel en parasotisch
Unstable and ... [can't find the original lyrics, the word might be parasitic]
maar vandaag dus niet
But not today, obviously...

After looking at this translation, it seems the non-German word in the German version is "plonst":

Dan plonst dan duikt ie en dan zwemt
He'll plunge, he'll dive and he'll swim

Hi Alfred,
PLONST doesn´t exist either but maybe the writer meant: er PLANSCHT

PLANSCHEN means to splash around.
You say this for small birds, when they clean theirselves in the water or with small little children, who can not swim already but paddling and jumping in the water. That makes really sense in that context!

Have a nice day

You are right, "plonsen" is the Dutch word for "to splash" in english. In German this is indeed "planschen".

Actually the English translation for the song from Alfred J kwak is this

Ill sing you the story of a duck
A duck who’s name is Alfred Kwak
Yes Alfred Jonathan Kwak
He comes from a lovely little town
A lovely town in water land
Where live is grand

Dipping, bopping, diving
Alfred is always striving he seldom wears a frown
Ull never keep a duck down
Dipping, bopping, diving
Alfred is always striving
He seldom wears frown
Ull never keep a good duck down
