Wie weit ist es bis ans Ende dieser Welt?
Hat ein Kind mich gefragt.
Und ich hab' ihm lächelnd irgendwas erzählt,
was man eben mal so sagt.

How far/long is it until the end of this world?
A child has asked me
and I have smiling explained something to him,
what they say right now.


Sprach von Meeren und dem fernen, fernen Land
von Geschichten und dem Mond.
Wie es früher war und was der Mensch erfand,
und mit Lachen hat es mich belohnt.

I spoke of the oceans and of the far, faraway country,
of stories/tales and of the moon.
How it was in the past and what the people invented
and with laughing has it rewarded me.


Dabei hielt ich eine Zeitung in der Hand,
doch ich schwieg, doch ich schwieg.
Las' noch einmal, was vor mir geschrieben stand,
doch ich schwieg, doch ich schwieg.

All the while I held a newspaper in my hand,
but I remained silent, but I remained silent.
Read once again, what stood written before me
but I remained silent, but I remained silent.


Wie weit ist es bis ans Ende dieser Welt, ist die Frage, die mich ruhlos macht.
Hab dem Kind von meinen Ängsten nichts erzählt, dass es weiter sorglos lacht.

How far/long is it until the end of this world, is the question, that makes me uneasy.
I have told the child nothing of my fears, that it continues carefree laughing.


Wie weit ist es bis ans Ende dieser Welt, wie weit ist es dass man nie die Frage anders Stellt.
Und die Erde von Ängsten wird frei, und die Erde von Ängsten wird frei.

How far/long is it until the end of this world, how far/long is it that you never question otherwise?
And the earth becomes free from fears, and the earth becomes free from fears.

Las' noch einmal, was vor mir geschrieben stand,

Yes ... it's complicated, "las" is the past tense of lesen

Oops, totally misread the word but I knew reading was involved. Those hyphenated words just do me in Thanks Steena
