/ Ta pedia tou Pirea
Piraeus children
Aπ' το παράθυρό μου στέλνω
/ ap' to parathiro mou stelno
from my window, I send off
/ ena, dio ke tria ke tessera filia
one, two and three and four kisses
/ pou ftanoun sto limani
that reach the harbour
/ ena ke dio ke tria ke tessera poulia
(as though) one and two and three and four birds
/ pos ithela na iha
how I wished I had
/ ena ke dio ke tria ke tessera pedia
one and two and three and four children
/ pou san tha megalosoun ola
once they would all grow up
/ tha yinoun leventes ya hari tou Pirea
to become "dashing" lads, for Piraeus's sake
/ oso ki an psaxo, den vrisko allo limani
no matter how I search, I cannot find another harbour
/ treli na m' ehi kani, oso ton Pirea
to make me "wild" over, as much as the Piraeus
/ pou otan vradiazi, tragoudia m' aradiazi
where, as soon as night falls, (it) pours out "songs" for me
/ ke tis penies tou alazi, yemizi apo pedia
and its "pen-sketches" changes, gets filled up with children
Aπό την πόρτα μου σαν βγω
/ apo tin porta mou san vgo
as soon as I walk out my door
/ den iparhi kanis pou na min ton agapo
there's noone I would not "love"
/ ke san to vradi kimitho
and as I go to sleep at night
/ xero pos, xero pos tha ton onirefto
I know that, I know that I will be dreaming of him (/her)
/ petradia vazo sto lemo
gems, on the neck I set
/ ke mia hantra filakto
and a bead (as a) charm
/ yati ta vradia kartero, sto limani san vgo
for at night I await, as I go out to the harbour
/ kapion agnosto na vro
a certain "stranger" to find
/ oso ki an psaxo ...
no matter how I search ...
[Note: "πενιά, πενιές", (/ penia, penies) ... a "pen mark", ... the "strumming of an instrument" ... this "instrument" being ... first and foremost ... a "mpouzouki" ... !!! ...... !!! ...
