Hi I'm from Italy, I studied ancient greek when I was in High school, I must admit it was a hard nut to crack, but I loved that language so I got a lot of good marks at school!!!ehehe...italian comes from latin and greek as well so in some schools we must study both of them to understand the origin of the italian language

You fell in the deep waters. Ancient Greek is much more difficult than modern Greek. At least you've learned something?
I think that Plato is easy and understandable. In the contrary, Aristotle is so difficult. His speech is strange and complicated....
You'll be surprised if you see how many differences there are between ancient and modern Greek. They are two different languages, but they have the sames roots, cause modern Greek has come from ancient Greek. Hear something funny... My aunt is French and sometime her father came from France to Greece. He knew ancient Greek from the school, so he went to a shop and he was speaking in ancient Greek. Then, the shopkeeper said to him "I'm sorry, I don't speak French..." He thought that they are similar. Poor guy...
Me I can understand ancient Greek, cause I study Greek language and literature, so it's my section. I have to know, cause in the future I'll teach ancient Greek and modern Greek in a Greek school.

well, I don't remember much at the moment because I studied ancient greek about 10 years ago,but I remember it was very difficult (five distinct morphological cases as nominative, genitive, dative, accusative and vocative and other things, above all the verb tenses...aorist as well). ..but I'd like to learn the modern greek so I'll follow all your lessons

Maria mou, talking about personal pronouns you gave us before... I have a question: what's the difference between strong and weak persons and when can i use strong or weak?

For each person of the personal pronoun there are two kinds of forms, the strong and the weak.
The strong forms are used when the pronoun is on its own, when we say smth with emphasis or to make a distinction. They have more syllables than the weak and in oral speech we pronounce them with greater stress.
The weak forms occur more frequently than the strong and they are used when we don’t say smth with emphasis or distinction. They can be used without a verb, except when they are equivalent to possessive pronouns. They are classified as proclitics or enclitics.
Declension
The first and second person personal pronouns follow their own (irregular) declension. The third person is declined like the adjective καλός (=good).
Only the second person has vocative.
Only the third person has separated forms fro the three genders.
The weak form of the third person has two forms for the accusative of the feminine plural (τις & τες). The form τις is used before the verb, while τες is used after it: Τις βλέπω. Αν τις δεις, χαιρέτα τες.
The weak first and second person personal pronouns have distinct forms for the genitive and accusative only the singular (μου, με). In plural they have the same form (μας, μας). The strong pronouns have the same form in both numbers (εμένα, εσένα, εμάς, εσάς).
The genitive plural of the third person in common to all genders (αυτών, τους). Orthography: the pronouns that begin with ε can undergo prodelision only when preceded by a word ending in [a], [o], or accented [é]. Pronouns that undergo prodelision aren’t written with an apostrophe: από μένα, καλέ συ, για σένα, από σας, μ’ εσάς, είμ’ εγώ, είσ’ εσύ, ούτ’ εσείς.
After και these pronouns lose their initial ε. But they can also written as κι: κι εγώ, κι εσύ.
The strong forms are often used together with the weak for greater emphasis than when the weak forms are on their own. Accusative: εμένα δε με ρωτούν, αυτόν τον ακούνε. Genitive: εσένα ο πατέρας σου, τα παιδιά μας εμάς θα πάνε αύριο ταξίδι. Genitive equivalent to an accusative with a preposition: δεν σου το λέω εσένα.
The weak forms of the third are used in the nominative, both singular and plural only in certain words and particularly with να: να τος, να τες, πού ‘ναι τος.
The accusative singular of the third person masculine always retains the final ν (αυτόν, τον).
When used as a proclitic, the accusative feminine την retains its final v if the word that follows begins with a vowel or a stop consonant.
When used as an enclitic, the accusative την doesn’t normally have the final v unless a vowel follows.

hi I 'm greek, too. well, maria as she studies ancient greek she understands them, but I can say that the greeks even if they recognise ancient words, as the modern come from them, the don't really get the meaning as the modern greek are completely different from the old greek...words we use now had an other meaning in ancient years, however we are in a better possision as, if we study a bit ancient greek(something we do at school but not everyone really remembers after years what he/she was taught) we will understand the easy ones!!!
