Σμυρναίικο μινόρε

Αν μ' αγαπά κι είν' όνειρο
ποτέ να μην ξυπνήσω
Μες στη γλυκιά τη χαραυγή
Θε μου ας ξεψυχήσω

Hi!

A non exact translation for this verse (sorry am not greek) would be :

If he loves me and it's a dream
I'd never (want to) wake up
in a sweet morning
I will die

Very good translation Nardy, only the last verse isn't correct, but I understand why you did this mistake. You thought that Θε is θα, but it's God. It should be Θεέ but when the word μου follows, we say Θε μου. So it should be...

Θε μου ας ξεψυχήσω - My God, may I die.

Hi,

I've worked out a different translation for the song "Smirneiko Minore."

Αν μ' αγαπά κι είν' όνειρο
ποτέ να μην ξυπνήσω
Μες στη γλυκιά τη χαραυγή
Θε μου ας ξεψυχήσω

If I am loved by him (or her),
and it is a dream,
when wouldn't I awaken?
In the sweetness of the happy dawn,
oh my God, I may as well lose my soul.

I thought the translation provided in this post last year was lovely, but there were some things I feel were better said differently. However, I am as apt to be mistaken as not, so I have put below some questions and reasonings. Could someone check them out and comment or straighten out my thinking if it is incorrect?

Αν μ' αγαπά κι είν' όνειρο -- In this line, could it be either sex who loves?

ποτέ να μην ξυπνήσω -- Is 'ποτέ να μην' an idiom for 'I should never'? because (to me) 'ποτέ' seems to imply a question here as if the singer is throwing up a question to God.

Μες στη γλυκιά τη χαραυγή

Θε μου ας ξεψυχήσω -- 'ας ξεψυχήσω' vs 'θέλω να πεθανω' Is 'ας ξεψυχήσω' just another way to say 'I want to die'. Is 'ας' not 'I should' or 'I may as well' -- or could it not be translated that way.
And if so, could 'θέλω να πεθανω' used instead?

thanks in advance,

Hi people! I would like to know the meaning of this song...could anybody help me with translation?
Thank you very much.

Yes, it could be, for sex is not specified. Yet it's supposed to be "he", as the song is sung by a female singer.

ποτέ να μην ξυπνήσω -- Is 'ποτέ να μην' an idiom for 'I should never'? because (to me) 'ποτέ' seems to imply a question here as if the singer is throwing up a question to God.

No, it's not a question at all, it's more like an oath - "May I never awake".
"Ποτέ" means "never", not "when". "When" is "πότε" (mind the accent).

Μες στη γλυκιά τη χαραυγή - In the sweet crack of down

χαραυγή - daybreak, crack of down

"of daybreak" would be "της χαραυγής"

Θε μου, ας ξεψυχήσω ... It has a hmm... different connotation than "I want to die". Nobody wants to die, it's like the oath I already mentioned, a pray. Something like "My God, may I/let me faint".

Yes! Panselinos. I see that now. Thanks! I often forget to notice the accents -- so much easier to hear them for me! This: ας ξεψυχήσω still eats at me a bit.. But I'll look for it in my reading. evharisto poli.

Okay, I'll try to explain.

ας [as] conj. (1) let, may (near-syn να)
  • ας πούμε (έτσι) - let us say
  • ας υποθέσουμε - let us assume
  • ας μη λησμονούμε - let us not forget
  • ας πάει να λέει - let him talk; I don't care what he says
  • ας γίνει το θέλημά του - may his will be done
  • ας γίνει ό,τι θέλει or ό,τι θέλει ας γίνει - come what may
  • ας είναι - so be it; never mind (syn έστω)
  • ας το βρεις από το Θεό - may God requite you/punish you for this
  • ας τελειώσει το σχολείο και μετά παντρεύεται - let her finish school first, and then she can marry

"Ας" could be an appeal, an exhortation.
It could be a wish (ας μην ξυπνούσα από το όνειρο αυτό) or a blessing (ας σας δίνει ο Θεός χίλια καλά - may God give you...).
It could be an assent, you could compare it with "δέχομαι να, συμφωνώ να".
It could mean other things, like indifference (ας γίνει ό,τι θέλει - come what may) and so on.

Is it more clear now?

Yes, I understand it now. To see it used in so many different ways has helped me very much. thank you!

Now, can I ask you, do you all have Greek keyboards to type with. My ibook has this little box on the screen to choose the letters with one by one. I am thinking that there must be a better way than this to type in Greek on a computer?

Yes, there is . You will need to install the Greek keyboard layout on your ibook. To do that:

1) From the Apple menu choose System Preferences.
2) Double-click on International.
3)Select the Input Menu tab.
4) Check the language that you would like to set up (Greek)
5) Click on any of the Options buttons.
6) Click OK.
7) Close the International Window.
8) Quit out of the System Preferences.

A flag menu will now appear next to the speaker icon at the top of your desktop. Click on this menu to select between Greek and English. When you want to change back to English, just select the American flag.
