Music:Yiorgos Chatjinassios
Lyrics:Lefteris Papadopoulos
Είμαι φτωχός κουρασμένος σκυφτός ανθρωπάκος,
I'm a poor tired .... little man
των ταπεινών και των άλλων πουλιών φιλαράκος.
a fellow of the humble and all of the birds
Για δε μ' αφήνετε ήσυχο;
Why don't you leave me alone
Άστε με ήσυχο όλοι.
Let me alone all of you
Θέλω να ζήσω ελεύθερος,
I want to live free
δίχως ταυτότητα πια.
Without an id anymore
Μία ζωή με κρατάν, με κουνάν μ’ ένα σπάγγο.
a whole life they're holding me and moving me with (or tied on) a rope
Λόγια, σχολειά, μέρα νύχτα δουλειά και στον πάγκο.
Words, schools, all night and day work and afterwards at the bench
Για δε μ' αφήνετε ήσυχο;
Why don't you leave me alone
Άστε με ήσυχο όλοι.
Let me alone all of you
Θέλω να ζήσω ελεύθερος,
I want to live free
δίχως ταυτότητα πια.
Without an id anymore
Όπου χαρά πρώτη-πρώτη σειρά κάποιος κλέφτης.
And where there's happiness at the front line you 'll find a thief
Κι όποιο κακό κάνει τ' αφεντικό, εγώ είμ' ο φταίχτης.
And when the boss makes something wrong, ME, I'm to blame
Για δε μ' αφήνετε ήσυχο;
Why don't you leave me alone
Άστε με ήσυχο όλοι.
Let me alone all of you
Θέλω να ζήσω ελεύθερος,
I want to live free
δίχως ταυτότητα πια.
Without an id anymore
Old and precious song!!!!!!!!
Nowadays Papadopoulos is recognized not as a man who wrote some lyrics but pretty much as a poet.
If you liked tsanaklidou i recomment you to hear also :
1)Zelatina (kraounakis - nikolakopoulou)
2)Mama gernao (kraounakis - nikolakopoulou)
3)Mires (kraounakis - nikolakopoulou)
4)Tarantella (Tsaknis- Tsaknis)
5)Mia parea imaste (Spanos - Bourboulis)

"Gilgamesh, where are you hurrying to?
You will never find that life for which you are looking.
When the gods created man they allotted to him death,
but life they retained in their own keeping"
Thank you a lot for the precise, complete information and the comments. I have more than 80 songs of Tania but I never heard of "Mia parea imaste".
Mou aresei poly
- An m'agapas
- An de saresei to tragoudi mou
- File
- Gramma ston kyrio Niko Gatso
- Hliahtida ... kai polles (please excuse my poor greek!)
When and if you have some spare time I would be very happy to have the lyrics (in latin alphabet preferably) and translation of An m'agapas and Hliahtida but it's not urgent. "The lake is not burning" which a local expression to say: don't hurry (I live around the Lake of Geneva) !
The song "mia parea imaste" has been performed by a group of singer-composers.
Alexiou-Tsanaklidou-Savvopoulos-Chatzinassios (can't remeber anyone else!) it's a lovely song, pretty mutch the same style that chatzinassios used to write at early 80's...
If you love me
I'll steal colour from the fire and a white canvas
for the two of us to paint life again
If you love me
there won't be anywhere grey for you to look at
You will hold me and take me to festive ports
But if all this
which seems like crazy dreams becomes a scream
if all this and everything I have imagined do not come
It will be doom, it will grow dark, all light will be extinguished
perhaps because for me the world is you, only you
If you love me
there will be neither borders nor loneliness for us
with the north wind and the night stars as companions
If you love me
you will speak only with words from the heart
you will hold me and take me to festive ports
If you love me
there won't be anywhere grey for you to look at
you will hold me and take me to festive ports
If you love me
I'll steal colour from the fire if only you love me
If you love me
there will be no borders for us only if you love me
Thank you very much for your quick and professional help. It's a real pleasure to meet such a benevolent soul like you.
I would appreciate if you suggest me, some nice swiss songs.
American - english music factory gives the whole world mostly trash songs nowadays, and we cannot identify other countries' good songs since there's so little infos about them.
Thank you Very Much
Amethystos
As you probably know there are 4 official languages in Switzerland, with 3 different cultures (German, French and Italian). There are almost no "swiss" singers, singing in the 3 languages and appreciated in the whole country. Each artist makes a carreer in a tiny region (part of a small country like Switzerland). So there are very few swiss singers, famous abroad.
The most typical swiss music is a kind of country music, but essentially instrumental. Most people find it quite boring (there are different advices however!).
I may quote some singers, known abroad, like Stephan Eicher and Michael Von der Heide (2 german-speaking singers, who sometimes sing in French also), François Vé (a joung french-speaking singer), Henri Dès (french-speaking singer, for children only. As far as I know he has made an english version CD of his songs).
Because I live in the french-speaking area I know better the singers of the french culture (France, Belgium, Canada) and I may provide some suggestions. Of course it depends on your musical tastes.
As a example I suggest you one french song for which I have made a translation, because I think it's important to understand at least the general meaning of a song. As you know very well translation of a song is quite difficult, to be true without losing the poetic atmosphere. In Italian we say "traduttore, tradittore" which means "translator, traitor" !
It is from an old french singer: Charles Dumont
Léa - Charles Dumont
Dans son long fourreau de velours, ses cheveux roux en auréole,
In her long velvet sheath, her red hair like a halo
Gardienne de noirs paradis, c’est Léa qui ouvre la porte
Warder of black paradises, it is Léa who opens the door
Elle est la reine de la nuit pour ceux qui viennent solitaires ou à plusieurs
She is the queen of the night for those who come alone or together
Chercher l’oubli dans l’alcool qui remplit leurs verres
In order to find how to forget in the alcohol which fills their glasses
« Dis-moi Léa, dis-moi, à moi qui suis ton ami
«Tell me Léa, tell me, because I am your friend
Aimes-tu les hommes, aimes-tu l’argent, aimes-tu l’amour ? »
Do you like men, do you like money, do you like love? »
« Je n’aime qu’un seul homme depuis toujours, je ne dors bien que sur son épaule
«I have only loved one man, I only sleep well upon his shoulder
Tout le reste n’est que comédie, figuration, pas même un rôle, pas même un rôle »
All the rest is only comedy, representation, not even a role, not even a role »
Dans son long fourreau de velours, ses cheveux roux en auréole,
In her long velvet sheath, her red hair like a halo
Gardienne de noirs paradis, c’est Léa qui ouvre la porte
Warder of black paradises, it is Léa who opens the door
Léa défie la vie qui passe, rien n’a changé dans son regard
Léa defies life, which goes by, nothing has changed in her expression
Le temps ne laisse pas de traces de ses rencontres de hasard
Time leaves no tracks of her random encounters
« Mais dis-moi Léa, dis-moi, à moi qui suis ton ami
«But tell me Léa, tell me, because I am your friend
Aimes-tu les hommes, aimes-tu l’argent, aimes-tu l’amour ? »
Do you like men, do you like money, do you like love? »
« Je n’aime qu’un seul homme depuis toujours, je ne dors bien que sur son épaule
«I have only loved one man, I only sleep well upon his shoulder
Tout le reste n’est que comédie, figuration, pas même un rôle, pas même un rôle »
All the rest is only comedy, representation, not even a role, not even a role »
Dans son long fourreau de velours, ses cheveux roux en auréole,
In her long velvet sheath, her red hairs like a halo
Gardienne de noirs paradis, c’est Léa qui ouvre la porte
Warder of black paradises, it is Léa who opens the door
Beaucoup vers elle sont venus offrir des perles, des couronnes
Many (men) had come to her, offering pearls, crowns
Léa sourit et dit “non, merci”. Elle est la femme d’un seul homme.
Léa smiles and says “No, thanks”. She is the woman of only one man.
------------
I hope it helps, it gives an idea.
Yes its true if you have to keep the atmosphere of a song or even an organized text translation can be very difficult.
Even though there may be times where the original song say ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in its own mother-language. This thing gets even worse if the one who wrote the lyrics has (λεξιπενια) "word - poverty"... but the composer wrote a wonderful music about them. How could someone explain to a foreign listener that although this song sounds good it really says nothing...
Another thing is when you want to translate something that you really have heard some times but have not give some attention to it. It is difficult to give a nice try to translate
"I'm being liked,I'm being liked,I'm being liked how can we do it?
I'm being liked,I'm being liked,I'm being liked so we will not die"
even if you now that you've danced this song more than 20 times in your lifetime.....)
(This song trully exists!!!!!!)
The things are getting even worse when you cannot understand the meaning of lyrics in our own language....
"the little train was spinning bright and steammy IN the air,
Below was the sea with a ship and the moon was a little further"
(this one is poetry over Lucio Battisti's "Giardini di Marzo").
Even if you got the meaning of the poem there may be some points that your experience cannot realize so that you can mature them to words simple enough as neither you nor the readerer go crazy!
There are also times when a word has been taken from another language and has a new meaning nowadays. How can someone give the correct meaning of the writer, if the translation is based on words similar with the words of the readerer. For example, there is an old song called "Sympathy" from Rarebirds.
The word Sympathy is originally greek but if you try to translate the song as "Συμπαθεια" which is the pure translation, all the meaning is getting lost.
I am gratefull for your translation of "Léa", it's a very nice song, and you've done good job!
Thank you very much Amethystos
"Gilgamesh, where are you hurrying to?
You will never find that life for which you are looking.
When the gods created man they allotted to him death,
but life they retained in their own keeping"
Thank you for your interesting comments about translation.
Regarding swiss songs I suggest you listen to the song of Stephan Eicher "Rendez-vous", from his latest album "Eldorado" (2007), which is typical of his style.
Have a pleasant week!
