Default A song saved by its' singer .............

    Title: To tragoudi tis simaias
    Lyrics: Iakovo kabanellis
    Music: Mano Hadjidakis
    Sung by Laki Pappas
Lp: "Matomenos gamos & Paramythi choris onoma" (1965)

Well this is another strange story....

Iakovo Kabanellis, on the summer of 1958

wrote the theatrical script "Paramythi choris onoma" which is based on the fairytale called "Paramythi choris onoma" by Penelope Delta (I still ADORE all her fairytales).

In 1959 Mano Hadjidakis wrote 9 songs that were meant to act as prologues or epilogues of the 9 scenes of the theatrical script. The opening happened during November or December of 1959 but as Mano never totally repaid for those 9 songs (cause of the failure of the play) he totally forgot the melodies !

But the unknown Laki Pappas ,who was the guitar player and singer of this play, earned some money playing these 9 songs in local taverns.

Finally (some years after....), Mano met Pappas, remembered the melodies , and recorded with Pappas' voice an Lp based on "Paramythi choris onoma" and on another theatrical piece called "Matomenos gamos" (Lorca's "Blood wedding" translated by Niko Gkatsos).

You may read what Hadjidakis wrote for this story

To tragoudi tis simaias (Flag's song)

Now the blood will be my flag
and the wound will be my banner.
Throw your last glance at me
(as if it's) blood in my empty heart.

No my soldier I'll never leave you in stranger's hands
(the exact translation should be on foreign lands)
it's for you that I sing and dance by the riverside.

Warning: In youtube's video Mouschouri's singing "αγόρι μου" (my boy) instead of "στρατιώτη μου" (my soldier).

"Gilgamesh, where are you hurrying to?
You will never find that life for which you are looking.
When the gods created man they allotted to him death,
but life they retained in their own keeping"
