Default K'naan in the beggining lyrics

hey there, i'm new. Just reg'd up. I recently heard K'naan's song "In the beginning" from the ending scene in the new harold and kumar movie, i got the song and then transcribed the lyrics since i couldn't find any online. for all who have heard this awesome song and sweet beat, here is my labor and lost night before my psychology exam :-P please if i made mistake fix it, and get these around the inter web.

i saw like 100 requests for them when i ran some searches and what not.

enjoy and goodnight

YOW!

So -
In the beginning there was hum
from a poet whose pulse felt
DRUM DRUM DRUM!
He would perform prayers and all
till one day he heard a voice call
COME COME COME!
Just because he moved it was his cost
Just because he thinks he was a little lost.
People get held back
by the voice inside 'em.

Yo -
The voice said a voice speak inside you,
Rejoice and please let me invite you.
To evil greed and lies too.

Yeah
Confusing days he moved in ways it soon became hakuna
Koon Koon Koon.
and knock on his door the lord is no more
and knock on his door his soul is no more

la la la la…yeah
la la la la…that was in the beginning
la la la la…as the story goes on
la la la la…

So, so so-
The poets got a proposal
he would always hope but never know
what it feels to be free.
He would be the frozen imposed as the toes on all of the posin’
But it would be greed.
thats got him there
he's bound, hungry and, proud too.
People don’t care, people just scared,
People don’t care, people just prayer.

la la la la…yeah
la la la la…that was in the beginning
la la la la…there was a hum
la la la la…and things changed
la la la la…yeah, yeah

say-
it's better to light a candle than to curse the dark
in the eyes of the youth there are question marks
like freedom, freedom for the mind and soul
we don't see em,
see them for their worth at all.
that’s why we lead em
lead em to these wars and what is it we feed em
feed em our impurities and who it is we treat em
treat em like the enemy humanity will need em
need em like the blood we spill and where freedom

freedom for the hearts we fill
mislead em
they hunger for the love we give but we cheat em

the guys beat em and all he wants is his feedom em
so they defeat em

whatever spirit he’s got
beat em
and they teach em the rest of the world don’t need him
and he believes it’s a disease that he’s heathen
Put up your fists if all you want is freedom
Put up your fists if all you want is

la la la la…that was in the beginning
la la la la… and things change

yeah, yeah, yeah.

we keep holding on,
And we keep being strong,
And we keep going on,
and on and on and on.

3x
[ And we keep holding on,
And we keep being strong,
And we keep going on,
and on and on and on. ]

Smile K'Naan - In The Beginning Lyrics

Just registered cos I'd been looking for lyrics to this everywhere, and was pleased to find a stab at it here.

Thanks brockk!!!
You covered all the bits I didn't know. Below, a slightly amended version.

*

In the beginning there was hum
from a poet whose pulse felt
DRUM DRUM DRUM!

He would perform prayers and all
till one day he heard a voice call
COME COME COME!

Suspicious he moved to vicious caution
Dismisses, he thinks just a little often
People get held back
by the voice inside 'em.

The voice said a voice is big inside you
Rejoice then and please let me invite you
To evil greed and lies too.

Confused and dazed he moved in ways he soon became hakuna
BOOM BOOM BOOM
A knock on his door, his heart is no more
A knock on his door, his soul is no more

So -
The poet’s got a proposal
he would always hope but never know
what it feels to be free
He would be the frozen imposed as the chosen, all laws oppose him
But it would be greed
That’s got him there
he's power-hungry, and proud too.
People don’t care, people just scared
People don’t care, people just fade

They say-
it is better to light a candle than to curse the dark
in the eyes of the youth there are question marks
like freedom
freedom for the mind and soul, we don't see em
see them for their worth at all, that’s why we lead em
lead em to these wars and what is it we feed em
feed em our impurities and who it is we treat em
treat em like the enemy humanity will need em
need em like the blood we spill and where freedom
freedom for the hearts we fill we mislead em
they hunger for the love we give but we cheat em
the guys beat him and all he wants is his freedom,
so they defeat him, whatever spirit he’s got beat him
and they teach him the rest of the world don’t need him
and he believes it’s a disease that he’s heathen
Put up your fists if all you want is freedom
Put up your fists if all you want is -

So -
In the beginning there was hum
from a poet whose pulse fell
Drum drum drum!

He would perform prayers and all
till one day he heard a voice call
Come come come!

Suspicious he moved with vicious caution
Dismisses, he thinks it's a little off

People get held back
By the voice inside them

Yo -
The voice said I'm poised to speak inside you
Rejoice and please let me invite you
To evil, greed and lies too

Yeah -
Confusing days he moved in ways he soon became a kuuni
Boom boom boom
And knock on his door his lord is no more
And knock on his door his soul is no more

La la la la- yeah
La la la la- that was in the beginning
La la la la- as the story goes on
La la la la-

So so so -
The poet's got a proposal
He would always hope but never know
What it feels to be free

He would be the frozen imposed as the chosen on all those opposing
But he would be greedy
That's got him there
He's power hungry and proud too

People don’t care, people just scared
People don’t care, people just prayer

La la la la- yeah

---------------------------

Now it kind of makes more sense, no?
A poet/preacher suddenly hears a voice inside him, he's skeptical at first but is confused and overturned by evil forces. He becomes [ kuuni (jealous) ], but here I do believe a Somali word for leader/chief or something would fit, but I can't make it out. Anyone Somali here who can make sense of it? :P

The voice does bring with it power but it also brings greed and takes away your freedom and soul. He becomes a prophet/leader and supresses the opposing people. They're afraid and pray for change.

Then in the following verse he says screw that. All we want is freedom, being heathen is ok, rise up and all that. This is probably pointing to what has happened in Somalia the last century. Specifically that any religion other than Islam is frowned upon, people following no religion, tribal ones, or e.g Christianity are heavily persecuted.

Note: I decided to use them and him etc, not 'em and 'im which is how it probably should be transcribed in most of the places. However, I feel the lyrics are easier to read this way.

Might help with some parts (live): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBk2g6ClCno

Good interpretation, araziel. We're getting closer!

Gotta quibble with your Somalian "kuuni" though - I'm pretty certain he sings "hakuna", meaning "without worry" in Swahili. The term is in use over much of East Africa, not just Somalia. See the Wiki entry on "hakuna matata": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakuna_matata

Btw, a truly awesome acoustic version of this song can be found on K'naan's live album "The Dusty Foot on the Road".

Ah, ok. I read that he sometimes uses Somali in his lyrics so I just guessed, but of course kuuni(and the meaning) is wrong, it was just my phonetical interpretation of it.
I didn't know hakuna alone could carry that meaning, but if it does then that's probably spot on.

This is the first time I've heard of K'naan or this song, but I heard it on Harold and Kumar Escape to Guantanamo Bay. And I've listened to a few of his songs. KickED PushED, as well as this and him featured with Mos Def. Good Music. Thanks for the lyrics!
