This song has been sung in my family for thte last 3 generations...going back at least to the mid 30s. Grandparents were immigrants( Scotland and Ireland), so not sure of origin, year or artist. Lyrics are:
One dark night, I lit candle and the house took the light
The fire engines came and the the stairs gave way
I was on the ladder when the hose began to spray
Water, water, put the fire out
But the water wouldn't do as it was told
So to rescue me they went and got a ladder
But the ladder was a way too short
So with my little waggin' willie in my hand
I stepped right out of the window
And oh my soul was a telegraph pole
Oh Lord love me, with a face as black as coal
I was whistle'n, I was whistle'n
With my shirt on fire I ran across the wire with my little waggin' willie in my hand.
Thanks
