Looking for 90's artist

I really like Marc Cohn but there is an artist from the 90's that I am looking for that sounds VERY similar to Marc.... I had the CD forever, but it's been years since I've heard it.. might even sound a little like John Mayer..
He sings about working in a factory on one song.. and andother one is about driving for miles down some road... not necessarily love songs, but a SUPER album.. I can NOT for the life of me find his name... I would recognize it if I saw it... I want to say his name starts with a J or an M... but I could be wrong..
