Arrow A question about an older song

It is a classic, from 80' probably? sung by a man with low voice or a woman's voice similar to tanita tikaram. rather a man, I think. there are some instruments, like saxofones, violins? I don't remember. they appear only from time to time

and in chorus there's a long sentence ending with a word 'times' (or something that rhymes, I dunno. nights, lies, cries?) right before the phrase 'I love you' and it keeps repeating

I heard it a few times in childhood and it haunts me like a ghost for a few days now. I can't find it anywhere and have no clue what can it be. Actually it's kinda popular on the radio, maybe I should start listening to it.

and I can't remember what the words were. I'm polish and last time I heard it I didn't understand much except for 'I love you'

Tracy Chapman sounds sometimes like a man

this song comes in my mind: YouTube - Baby Can I hold you

    just a wild guess though...
