Trying to locate old war song
Hi there,
My question is about an old song my mother sang to me when I was young...it was a war time song and she has given me the lyrics over the phone as best as she can recall (she's 88 now), I've tried Google to no avail. It was a sad song, and I used to cry every time she sang it! Here are the verses, hope someone out there can help me! It's British by the way.
My mom thinks it was called A Soldier's Farewell....but she's not sure.
One lovely summer's evening, when all the world was still.
Two lovers wandered down the lane, beside the old windmill.
He was leaving on the morrow for a land so far away,
and as she nestled close to him, these words she heard him say,
"I'll come back my little sweetheart in the spring... in the spring,
Those wedding bells for you will loudly ring,
when every wrong is righted, our hearts shall be united,
I'll come back my little sweetheart in the spring".
And now the scene has changed....we're on the battlefield.
The lads out there were fighting hard, their noble flag to shield.
When a stray shot struck our hero, he was numbed with the pain,
and as he lay there dying these words they heard him say.
"You'll be lonely little sweetheart in the spring...in the spring,
those wedding bells for you will never ring.
My thoughts are all of you my love, so think of me when I'm above.
You'll be lonely little sweetheart in the spring.
In a cottage by the hillside, sits a maiden young and sad, the tears were streaming down her cheeks, for the letter she had had.
She read it o'er and o'er, twas more than she coould bear, and before another morn had passed she had gone to a land so fair.
And they laid her in the graveyard in the spring, those wedding bells for her did never ring.
And not a word of him was spoken, for they knew her heart was broken,
and they laid her in the graveyard in the spring.
That's it....what a tear-jerker! Would like to know if anyone has ever heard of it, and who wrote it, was it ever recorded etc., any info. appreciated really.
Thanks to all,
Avie.
