Its driving me potty, a folksy kind of song from my childhood maybe around 1976 - the lyrics were
caira caira kimbaye,
the stars will guide you on your way
caira caira caira kimbaye
caira caira wait for me
when i return across the sea
caira caira ill be back some day

You can still hear the sound as they sail away
singing kimbaye kimbaye

i have tried searching on the internet but no luck

was it a female? The only artist I can think of who has lyrics like this is Zap Mama (she did the song "iko iko") but I'm not sure if she was around in the 70's

no the singer was a man and it was something along similar lines to a sea shanty is the best way i can describe it
