This song was from the early 70's.
The first part of the song is:
When the war breaks out down in Mexico, I'm gonna go to Montreal.
Got a cousin of a cousin of a fisherman, and it's time I paid a friendly call.
Anyone?

The song may be much older than that. A manuscript for the following song
"When the war breaks out in Mexico I'm going to go to Montreal."
Words by J. Brandon Walsh, music by Ernest Breuer.
Chicago: Will Rossiter, c1914.
. . . is listed as part of the "Sophie Tucker" Collection in the New York Public Library. See http://www.nypl.org/research/manuscr.../mustucker.xml for a complete listing of the collection.
So the challenge is -- who recorded this 1914 song in the 1970s? This may be a clue -- Capitol Records Capitol T/ST-1728, by "Dave Guard and the Whiskeyhill Singers", contained a song based on the older tune. It was released in 1962. For more information about the album, see the Judy Henske Fan web site at http://www.judyhenskefan.com/disco/whiskey.html.
Perhaps it was the Dave Guard version of the song that you heard in the 70's?
