Very very wild guess but I instantly started to sing "Aeroplane" by the Chilis, when I read your request It's mid 90s and was quite popular in the scene of alternative music back then ... though the line you state is not in it. It also had a video, on Youtube I found the sound only:

nope, definitely not the chili peppers, the song is very melodic. I keep thinking it might be the band live but then something tells me thats not right either. The song is called something else.
