    Default Tom Paxton

There is a song that Tom Paxton sang on one of the morning news shows, back in 1968, after the assassination of Robert Kennedy. It was a tribute song, with some of the lyrics that went something like:

"Well, then, lay you down/on the hillside by the town/some will say farewell, they will/to me your heart is beating still." I cannot find those lyrics anywhere, and I am not sure that he ever recorded the song. Some argue that I am talking about "Outward Bound," but that is not the song.

OK, I've found an album (from Tom Paxton.com - http://www.tompaxton.com/discography.html) in which it states:

"and Outward Bound, dedicated to Bobby Kennedy and performed by Tom during the television coverage of the funeral train's journey from New York to Washington".

Hmmm so if this isn't the song, as you have said above, I'm gonna have to keep looking.

There is a 'contact us' on this webpage... may be worth sending them an email?

Tom Paxton - Well Then, Lay You Down

    WELL THEN, LAY YOU DOWN

Ah, you knew it had to come,
One more day of muffled drums,
You knew it, ah, you had to know,
And still your courage told you, "Go."

    (chorus)
    Well then, lay you down,
On your hillside by the town,
Some will say farewell, they will,
I think that heart is beating still.

Ah, you knew how this would end,
You made the friendless man your friend,
We knew the danger and told you so,
And still your courage told you, "Go."

Now they've wrapped the train in black,
    Gathered along the railroad track,
You knew it, ah, you had to know,
And still your courage told you, "Go."

When the truly brave man dies,
    Thousands more will surely rise,
You knew it, ah, you had to know,
Their courage too will tell them, "Go."
