No, I can't agree with it. It may be a synonym but not always.

My italian friend explained me that "ti voglio bene" you can use when you speak with a friend and want to say - I take care of you, I like you, I want to give you everything the best.....but you needn't be fall in love with him/her

When he speaks about his parents he always says : Io voglio molto bene ai miei parenti...So you can use this expression to talk about your parents or relatives..

And "ti amo" means - I love you ...And you can say it when you talk about(or to) your only love

But I'm not an Italian so I can be wrong...It's just the way I think...

Italian translators said that to me (it's what they do for living). Apart form that I had an Italian boyfriend and he used to say ti voglio bene many times. I thought that it meant something like I like you, so I wasn't paying attention sometimes and he was getting angry (until he explained that to me). Maybe in the south it is used like this. Soemtimes there are these kind of differences between norht and south

Certo, ci sono delle differenze, ma credo derivino dalla diversa storia che il nord e il sud hanno avuto.
Nel nord tutto funziona più in fretta, le persone vanno di corsa, mentre nel sud in generale si vive in maniera più rilassata.

Non molto tempo fa un rappresentante della Lega Nord, il partito di cui ti ho parlato prima, voleva che dure ragazze africane scendessero dal treno, perché secondo lui lo sporcavano.

I agree with you Alyson.
Only one thing: the "passato remoto" is used in the whole south but not in Sardinia Island. Here we use the "passato prossimo" just like in the North.
Some people say that Sardinia Island is a piece of Northen Italy in the South! And someone else say that if Lega Nord would divide Italy into two parts, Sicily would go to Southern Italy and Sardinia to the Northen one.
I only hope Italy will always be ONE AND UNDIVISIBLE... even because it has been reunited by the Sardinian Kingdom in 1860!

Grazie per le informazioni Superstar, adesso sono piu tranquilla avendo il parere di qualcuno che vive in Italia e che sa come vanno veramente le cose.
E sapevo della Lega Nord, ma comunque non mi sembra coretto che diventi uno stato indipendente, ma credo che gli interessi siano molti ed importantissimi.
In cio che riguarda la Sardegna, sicuramente la visitero un giorno...ma prima ci sono le CinqueTerre che vorrei tanto vedere.

About the Italian being the only official language, try to say that to professor in the univercity that used to talk in dialect (dialetto stretto), and I was in the first semester so my language skills were not so strong. Differences between south and north do exist. I don't think that you ever had to stay out in the rain or cold or whatever to wait for the bus for more than half an hour. That doesn't exist in the north. You never had to walk in smelly streets, not only by the garbage. In the city I were saying: "why does everyone look down when they walk??? Because they have to always pay attention where they step on."

Tzina, I don't know your professor, but I am Italian 100% and I know my country. The only official language in Italy is Italian. Then there's a different language in each region, but that doesn't mean that they're official languages. If your professor used to talk to you in "dialetto stretto", he was a boor. That doesn't mean that everybody here is a boor. Try and think that: if a person from Trieste and one from Palermo have to talk... do you think they'll talk in Friulano and Siciliano? Or maybe in Italian, so they can communicate in their national language? We're all Italians, we all speak Italian. Dialects are used like a slang, with friends, family.
Sardinian is a language, not a dialect: it has its own grammar, syntax and everything and quite every Sardinian person speaks Sardinian language: we're bilingual, just like Belgians with Dutch and French, but if you are a stranger and you come to Sardinia, we all speak Italian, because Italy's official language is Italian and you might understand that language, not Sardinian.
About the differences between Northen and Southern Italy, I was talking about the language, not about the time you wait for the bus.
About all the things you said (smelly streets, busses late and so on), I don't know where you have been, but I can make you sure that my City is in the South (Sardinia) but the streets are not smelly at all, the busses are punctuals and so on. I am sure that even in Greece there are places where you could have to wait for the bus, or you don't smeel roses in the air and so on. In Italy we say "tutto il mondo è paese", and that means that you can find everything everywhere. Good things and bad things: in Italy, China, USA, Greece, Israel, Turkey, Poland, Russia, Sweden and so on.

Süperstar,I know the difference between official language of a country and dialects (we have them too). I was in Bari, it happened many times to me to go to public places and people were talking to me with words in dialect (I already knew what they meant so I had no problem, apart the market were it took me 3-4 years to understand what awant means). About all the things I said (smelly streets, busses late and so on), those are things that Italian friends of mine told me. And why every young person I found under the age of 30, they all wanted to go to the north??? I don't say that here in Greece things are better, but just that in Italy the people in the south feel like that many times (many things are to blame for that, including the mafia).
I had a Sardinian friend (his parents were Sardinian but he was raised up If I remember correctly in Bologna) although I asked him several times he always referred to the Sardinian as a dialect. Most probably that's why whenever I asked him questions on the Sardinian he was trying not to respond(he knew nothing about it).
