I understand perfectly well the Spanish from Spain, but it's hard to me to understand sometimes the Spanish from most of the countries in Centro América. But it's just my case. I must say that in Spain people use for the second person plural "vosotros" and all of us this side of the Atlantic use "ustedes", and it's different the way that those pronoum are conjugated, example:

Modo indicativo
Ustedes aman / Vosotros amáis (presente)
Ustedes amaban / Vosotros amabais (Pretérito imperfecto o Copretérito)
Ustedes amaron / Vosotros amasteis (Pretérito perfecto simple o Pretérito)
Ustedes amaran / Vosotros amaréis (Futuro simple o Futuro)
Ustedes amarían / Vosotros amaríais (Condicional simple o Pospretérito)

Modo subjuntivo
Ustedes améis / Vosotros amen (presente)
Ustedes amaran/amasen / Vosotros amarais/amaseis (Pretérito imperfecto o Pretérito)
Ustedes amaren / Vosotros amareis (Futuro simple o Futuro)

And in Argentina we conjugate different for second person singular, we use "vos" instead of "tú", and the conjugation is very different (example: "Pero qué es lo que vos querés" and "Pero qué es lo que tú quieres")... I can understand any clean Spanish (not dirty with slang), I think, I don't understand slang at all , the words that not belong to the language, but belong to the every zone. Besides the slang, that of course it's natural to not be understood for someone who has never heard it before, the Spanish is basically the same...
I've seen series, novels, or movies from Spain, México, Venezuela, Colombia and Chile and I did understant it all, I didn't have problems. But sometimes it get hard for me to understand some countries of centro américa... But not that hard!!!!

But not totally right, of course we use the usted/ustedes pronouns but as the polite form to address people that why it's funny for me to hear an adult addressing children that way in Latin America
