Michael Jackson twins indeed. I can't help but feel if they let the eyebrows plucked, I can't stand the Unibrow, but NATURAL somewhat, it wouldn't be so bad. And the paleness and the make-up and the dancing... Is it me, or is Iranian pop music in general still too strongly inspired by Michael Jackson? lol This is why it took me this long to get INTO Iranian pop... which usually isn't even popular IN iran, but whatever. The OLD stuff was so great. Gogoosh and Daryiush and such and such.

And I know I'm old school for a young person, but I'm kind of like that in general with music. I so prefer old classic rock music to anything on the radio nowadays.

I am an old person inside.

Paul, lol my cousins call me Mariam Sotah!

I am also into the classic stuff, Persian and Assyrian mainly (sometimes armenian)..but yeah I guess because ive never heard any other culture in the middle east use this unique pop music because other countries are more how should i say"arabized" by the middle eastern drums etc.

P.S. Have you heard much of Vigen's songs? Theyre really similar to George Chaharbakshi and Evin Agassi's music, i guess its because of their urmian dialect lol

Default Mach (Kiss / Smack) by Afshin (Album Mach)

hol holaki ye mach dad --- hurry-scurry she gave me a kiss
che jor begam? --- how I say that?
badjoori mast o patil shod delam --- my heart got drunk
baghet abad angoori --- may your garden be green, O Grape
jadoo o janbalam kard --- she enchanted me
bord delamo zode zod --- she snitched my heart suddenly
engari roye labhash doa moa rikhte bod --- as if she had put a charm on her lips

ye mach dad o damesh garm --- she gave me a kiss, well-done!*
damesh garm baba, damesh garm --- well-done, well-done
in dele divoonashe --- my heart is crazy about her
elahy ke ye tar az moye siyash kam nashe --- may she never lose even a single hair (from her black hairs)

cheshme siyash khomare --- her black eyes are drunk
damesh garm baba, damesh garm --- well-done, well-done
lopash gole anare --- her cheeks are like flower of pomegranate
damesh garm baba, damesh garm --- well-done, well-done
lab, labe gholve dare --- she has red lips
damesh garm baba, damesh garm --- well-done, well-done
koshte ba yek eshare --- she has killed me by a blink
damesh garm baba, damesh garm --- well-done, well-done

engari ba mach o moch omade bood mokh zani --- as if she had come to craze me with just a kiss
mokhe dele maro zad, rahat o ab khordani --- she washed my heart's brain, really easy
ba on ye mache abdar javoon shodam dobare --- I became young with that succulent kiss again
kash bede on labaro omri be man ejare --- I wish she lend me her lips forever

* "Damesh Garm" is a phrase which almost means "bully for her" or "well-done"
when some one does a good work we say "Damesh Garm"
- literal means : may her/his breaths be warm forever.

Smile salam

In the name of the Eternal
!هر آن كسي كه در اين حلقه نيست زنده به عشق/ بر او نمرده به فتواي من نماز كنيد
حضرت حافظ

Salame man be to yare ghadimi {My greetings to you [my] old sweetheart}
Manam hamoon havadare ghadimi {I am the same old friend [of you]…
Che mikone in Haide!!!

SORRY I forgot to introduce yours truly! I am Masood and I live in karaj [somewhere around Tehran]. I study English Literature and I’m hooked on English, French, guitar and Hafez, why? because he himself says:
شعر حافظ همه بيت الغزل معرفت است/ آفرين بر نفس دلكش و لطف سخنش

Vanda you are great [rasti midoonesti faravaniye esmet faghat 50 hastesh, esme kheyli khassi dari mesle khodet!] but how did you forget to talk about the establisher of Achaemenid Persian Empire?

A new wind was blowing from the east,
Carrying away the cries and humility of defeated and murdered victims,
Extinguishing the fire of sacked cities, and liberating nations from slavery.
He was Cyrus the great… the phenomenon.

any way, although you have a great translator like Vanda I will be happy if I can help you sometimes with the lyrics.

If you have an apple and I have an apple, and we exchange apples, we both still only have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea, and we exchange ideas, we each now have two ideas.
George Bernard Shaw
With warm regards, Masood

And...

Khodahafez hamin hala *** goodbye right now
Hamin hala ke man tanham *** right now that I’m alone
Khodahafez be sharti ke befami *** goodbye [but] on condition that you find out…
Tar shode cheshmam *** my eyes have become wet
Khodahafez kami ghamgin *** goodbye, somewhat sad…
be yade oon hame tardid *** in memoriam to all those hesitations [that we had]
be yade asemooni ke mano az cheshme to midid *** literally: in memoriam to the sky which used to see me through your eyes
age goftam khoda hafez *** if I said goodbye...
na inke raftanet sadast *** it is not because your leaving is easy[for me]
na inke mishe bavar kard dobare akhare jadast*** it is not because it can be believed [or it is believable] that the end of the road [of love] is arrived again
khodahafez vase inke nabandi del be royaha*** goodbye for you don’t become hopeful about [fictional] dreams [because I don’t want that you become hopeful about dreams that can never be fulfilled]
bedooni bi to vo ba to hamine rasme in donya*** for you understand that with you or with out you it is the custom of this world [the convention of this world is like this]
khodahafez khodahafez khodahafez hamin hala*** goodbye goodbye goodbye right now

Question MOIN, Doa

Ba ham biya doaa konim*** let’s pray together
khodamoono seda konim***[Let’s] call our Lord
ba ham biya doaa konim*** Let’s pray together
khodamoono seda konim***[Let’s] call our Lord

Ke asemoon bebare ***that the sky would rain
faravooni biyare***[and] bring excess [or wealth][of gifts]

azash bekhaym baramoon*** [let’s] ask him[God]…
sange tamoom bezare ***to do his best for us
sange tamoom bezare ***to do his best for us

rahaye baste va she*** the closed roads would be opened
hichki gharib nabashe ***no body would be lonely [strange]
soorato shekle hichkas*** no body’s face and figure…
mardom farib nabashe***would be demagogue
mardom farib nabashe ***would be demagogue [no body would have a deceptive appearance]

shafa bede marizo***he would mend the patient[ it means everyone who is patient]
khat bezane setizo***[and would] eliminate the conflicts
roo hich divaro boomi***on no wall or roof…
nakhoone joghde shoomi***no evil owl would be singing
nakhoone joghde shoomi***no evil owl would be singing

doaa konim raha shan***let’s pray that become free
oona ke tooye bandan*** those who are slaves [or are in prison]*( those who are slaves become free)
az bas nabashe na ahl*** [and] from an excess lack of wicked people
zendoonaro bebandan***they would close the prisons

khodesh midoone dare ***he himself knows
harkesi arezooyi*** that every individual has a wish
in bashe arezoomoon*** our dream should be this
narize aberooyi *** that no one’s honor would be stained
narize aberooyi ***no one’s honor would be stained

siaho sefid ye rang beshe***White and black would unite [mix] and change into one color
zeshtihamoon ghashang beshe***Our obscenities [ugliness] would change into virtues[beautifulness]

kaviraa abad beshan***deserts would become fertile
asira azad beshan***Slaves would become free

khodesh midoone dare ***he himself knows
harkesi arezooyi*** that every individual has a wish
in bashe arezoomoon*** our dream should be this
narize aberooyi *** that no one’s honor would be stained
narize aberooyi ***no one’s honor would be stained

problematic parts:
sange tamoom[or in bookish manner tamum] gozashtan: sang: stone* tamoom or tamum: complete*gozashtan: to put. It is an expression, it means to strive or try hard for doing something.
Here, it means let’s pray and want god to try as much as he can to fulfill our dreams. This sentence seems to be very purely, and it reminds you the way that a child thinks and talks about God. Let’s use the patronage to persuade God to accept our pray!

Rah: way* baste: closed*Va: in bookish manner,Baz: open* she: bookish manner, shavad: become* Va she: baz shaved: will be opened

Hichki: bookish manner: hichkas: nobody

mardom farib: is consisted of two nouns, mardom: people*farib: deception, cheat. mardom farib is something or someone that deceives or cheats other people.

roo hich divaro boomi/ nakhoone joghde shoomi: in old beliefs owl was an evil and [fated] animal, in the old times the singing of an owl on a wall was very bad and it was a sign of adversity, so the poet wishes a day that owls don’t sing on the walls: no body would be unfortunate.

shan: bookish manner: beshavand

oona ke tooye bandan: oon: un: that* a: ha: is the sign of plurality * unha: those* band: has to meanings:1.prison 2.slavery

az bas nabashe na ahl/ zendoonaro bebandan
na ahl : someone that is not ahl* ahl: honorable and good. The poet wishes a day that there would be no wicked person, so all the prisons would be closed

Today was the first time that I tried to translate a poem line by line, so I hope I would be excused for my mistakes. Dear Vanda will find it in her archive and put it for you later.

شب ظلمت و بيابان ،به كجا توان رسيدن؟/ مگر آنكه شمع رويت به رهم چراغ دارد

haha yeah it's fun being legal I suppose. Yeah he's a really nice guy. =D

Yes, I'm majoring in Journalism and International Studies, with minors in History and Italian... told you, I love languages and culture! My mission is to get half way decent in Farsi, and next summer I'm going to Iran [allahmente] to visit my uncles and aunts there. From there, I hope to learn Arabic, and then I'll learn Spanish. Lol. Italian, I hope to be fluent in by the time I graduate.... I'm almost there. ;-)
