TURN Cultural Association brings for the first time on the Romanian stage the band Kultur Shock at the first edition of International Romani Art Festival, which will take place in Timisoara, during the period 31st of August- 6th of September.
An intercultural product which has the mark of non-discrimination and diversity, Kultur Shock threatens the IRAF public with an infusion of sound, color, energy, courage, life. A positive and premeditated cultural shock, with a precise purpose: to break the imposed and auto-imposed boundaries, to squeeze out emotions and produce sensations.
Founded in Seattle by Gino Yevdjevich (a Bosnian Serb and former Yugoslavian pop star), Kultur Shock is a cultural explosion as much as it is a musical collective. Guitarist Mario Butkovich is a Bosnian Croat and Val Kiossovski, who plays rhythm guitar, is from Bulgary. Bassist Masa Kobayashi hails from Japan, while drummer Chris Stromquist brings a punk rock background and a love for Latin beats. Violinist Matty Noble is a recent addition from Seattle .
The songs on their albums Fucc The I.N.S. and Kultura Diktatura, rhythms of rumba, samba-like beats, rock, punk, heavy rock, hip-hop and dark tribal and house beats are combined. Serbo-Croatian, Macedonian, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, and English sound perfectly at home together in the Kultur Shock melting pot. If you want to hear something that is totally different to everything that all your hear everyday, but something that will rock you and make you dance, then you mustn’t miss the Kultur Shock concert, the band people say is an inexplicable and impressive musical experience.
In the last 4 years Kultur Shock made 6 European and 3 US tours. So far they have played in Spain, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Switzerland, Check Republic, France, Italy, Croatia, Russia, Canada and USA, and now they will also play in Timisoara, at International Romani Art Festival.

Our purpose, through this event, is to offer a new perspective over an actual subject, to offer the opportunity that as many people as possible to find out about the roma people love for life and about their joy, to leave behind their suspicious looks, to open their eyes in order to see a more beautiful world, enriched by the diversity of the people around us, the world that we actually live in.
Maybe after this festival we will have emancipated at least a bit from the prejudices and we have embraced the beauties of non-discrimination and multiculturalism.
This is the only event in the world that reunites all the arts, having as a central point the roma people and their culture, which remained as alive and authentic as it was decades ago, a neglected and sometimes even totally ignored by the different political regimes.
International Romani Art Festival means free acces to open-air concerts, photography and film contests with thousands of euro prizes, coppersmiths’ and silverers’ fairs, horses parades with acrobatic demonstrations, movie nights, indoor and outdoor photography exhibitions, projections inspired from the life of the roma people from Romania, literary mornings, dance and photo workshops, roma language courses, informing events, dance shows, modern theatre, literature contests, debates over roma architecture, roma history and other.
IRAF will take place under the High Patronage of the Romanian Cultural Institute and of the National Council for Fighting Discrimination.
