Joey held a world record for a while, most beats per second on a drum-kit. It was like 9 or 10 beats per second, but it was beaten recently, unfortunately. The rush drummer is pretty good too.

Neil Peart from Rush
thats bottom line :P
Alittle off subject but their Bassist Geddy Lee is the best bass as well. Though, John Myung is pretty damn close, and Cliff Burton as well though he passed away long time ago

and Travis Barker is KILLER..I Don't care you dig Blink Or Not, Barker is awsum, he uses elements of hip hop blended with rock with weird but appeasing time structures, and in my opinion, utilizes the snare drum and high hats on his set better than many other drummers out there

The voice was the first instrument, then drums

Although you are probably referring to drummers who are still alive,
my overwhelming number one vote is Buddy Rich.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddy_Rich
Second place goes to Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake and Palmer)

bonham...
paul mccartney's drummer (Hawaiian dude) is really good. does a lot of studio work for famous musicians/artists.
i think a lot of the drummers mentioned before are good but i think the technical and flashy drumming doesn't always mean better. taste and knowing your place in the mix is important to me.
