hello everybody

i was just looking for the lyrics of an iranian song and by chance i arrived on this forum, more specifically on the farsi pages ) aaaah it's SO great ! i was very curious about discovering some more iranian songs *such a great country!* and here i see that some sweetheart is even translating the songs she's proposing to download

oh by the way, would you mind if i ask you just the lyrics of that song "Jasamin" from Omid ? i don't need the translation (though it would be amazing !) but i couldn't find them on the net (sadly i don't read farsi)

Hi David jan, really welcome to this topic, hope you enjoy and stay with us

mikonam means "I do" or "I would/will do" ... It depends
ofcourse sometimes it has a bad meaning e.x "mikonamet" =))

really? how funny :-)

actually Vanda means desire in ancient persian and it's quite rare. when some one asks me "what's your name?" and I say "Vanda" he says "what? Vanda? what does it mean?"
and my second name (which my mom calls me) is Yasna, and it's also rare, it means "prayer/praise with happiness"
I donno why my parent named me like this :-(

I'm originally from Venezuela but moved to the US more than 25 years ago.

I became interested in farsi by accident a few years ago - I was flipping through the channels on TV when I saw a foreign movie that caught my eyes and ears, I had never heard the language before but felt an instant connection like a sense of deja-vu. It had a surreal familiar euphonism, it was almost musical and the words just flowed like a magical poem. I called the TV station and they told me that the movie was "The White Balloon" (a.k.a. Badkonake sefid) by Jafar Panahi. Well, the rest is history...I decided to learn more about this far away culture. In the process I read several books about iran and compiled a huge collection of iranian films. And until very recently I discovered persian pop music when I first heard the song "Arash" playing on a latin radio station. Given that, this forum is truly a blessing since It has helped me discover persian artists and songs that otherwise I would have never heard of here in the US.

I'm really looking forward to learning the persian language and hopefully in the near future to visit Iran. Maybe we can all meet there!

well no i don't speak farsi, at all. I've travelled in Iran for 3 weeks back in 2004 (i was 19 lol), all alone, with a bag... oh it was GREAT!!! people were so friendly, so helpful, so... well i only have good rememberance of that country this is maybe why i love it so much (regardless of the wonderful culture they have there). i wanna go there again soon, but as excpected none of my friends is too keen on it *grrrrrrrrr* and it's apparently nearly impossible to get the visa from France (i got it from Turkey last time). Anyway...

Vanda ur name is great, and it's meaningful as well, u lucky one. think of all these who have name that mean nothing and that is used to call so many people ? what is rare is valuable


PS: all i remember from the sentences i learnt there "man farsi balat nistam"... "na mifatman"... "no but realy... na mifatmam " pff and by that time i could even read the arabic numbers, i forgot most of it. a cool guy even explained me (in farsi lol) how from these arabic signs we got our own 'so called' arabic numbers 1 2 3 4 5 and so on... wanna go baaack !

Nah, I'm not advanced at Farsi at all! I'm just a beginner, as mostly everyone here is. You're right about this forum being a farsi kindergarten

The only help I have with Farsi is dear Vanda and this thread, and all the lovely helpers on this forum. I've learned so many words from reading all the pages...its almost like a farsi dictionary!
As far as motivation, I guess my only motivation is that I really really want to go to Iran...its been my dream to be fluent in Farsi ever since I was very young Currently I'm studying alone from easypersian.com, they're lessons are quite good! but since i've just started, I've only reached lesson 18 . Oh yeah, and many of Farsi words are similar to the languages I speak or understand...so that helps too!!

Hopefully one day we'll all be able to speak in only Farsi with each other!

Well... I am speachless at this moment... I am not sure about what I have just seen... was is a woman singing in Farsi with Russian subtitles? I am not sure whether this video is contemporaneus or from the 70s... but the misic is nice, and the singer is quite beautiful! and look at the dancer behind her!:-)

I mean, the server cannot connect to this place. But it was sweet your screenshoot to know where I have to click! :-) Actually, for a person not used to read arabic characters, they all look the same. Besaide this, they are damm small! I wonder how you do not get blind! An standar arabic font is smaller than an standar roman font. Why is this?...

I saw this video from Idin, taghir... It was the first time I saw him in movement :-) I understand now whay he is not so popular in Iran... But the song is also nice.

Nah, I'm not advanced at Farsi at all! I'm just a beginner, as mostly everyone here is. You're right about this forum being a farsi kindergarten

The only help I have with Farsi is dear Vanda and this thread, and all the lovely helpers on this forum. I've learned so many words from reading all the pages...its almost like a farsi dictionary!
As far as motivation, I guess my only motivation is that I really really want to go to Iran...its been my dream to be fluent in Farsi ever since I was very young Currently I'm studying alone from easypersian.com, they're lessons are quite good! but since i've just started, I've only reached lesson 18 . Oh yeah, and many of Farsi words are similar to the languages I speak or understand...so that helps too!!

Hopefully one day we'll all be able to speak in only Farsi with each other!

:-) well, I am not sure whether I will live do long to be able to speak Farsi! :-) Now I am more ambitious: I want to speak farsi with Tajik accent :-))))

I am joking, I am joking, I dont even know how tajik accent sounds like....

I also started those lessons, but I had to stop it for a while because I was buried on work.

Anyhow, I think you can make more sentences than most of us. I just know lots of words separatdly, but I dont know how to put them together.

PS: all i remember from the sentences i learnt there "man farsi balat nistam"... "na mifatman"... "no but realy... na mifatmam " pff and by that time i could even read the arabic numbers, i forgot most of it. a cool guy even explained me (in farsi lol) how from these arabic signs we got our own 'so called' arabic numbers 1 2 3 4 5 and so on... wanna go baaack !

Oh! this is so very nice that you have compiled such a great collection of Iranian movies. It would be nice, if you dont mind, you to give us some advices. Actually, I very much want to buy an iranian movie, but I dont know which one. I have absolutely no idea where to satrt from. So, if you could give us some titles, it would be more than great! :-)

I see so many friends are asking about numbers in farsi therefore I decided to talk about numbers in farsi. First I should told you the numbers in farsi and Arabic have the same signs.

Well , we begin :
1 = 1
2=2
3=3
4= 4
5= 5
6= 6
7=7
8=8
9=9
0= 0

Ok now let's see how we read numbers in farsi :

1= yek , 2= dou , 3= se , 4=chahar , 5 = pang , 6= shesh , 7= haft , 8= hasht , 9 = noh ,

10 = dah , 11 =yazdah , 12=davazdah , 13= sizdah , 14= chahardah , 15 =panzdah ,
16 = shanzdah , 17 = hefdah , 18=hegdah , 19= nozdah ,
20 = bist , 30=si , 40=chehel , 50 = pangah , 60 =shast , 70=haftad , 80= hashtad ,
90 = navad
100= sad , 200=devist , 300= sisad, 400= chaharsad , 500=pansad, 600=shessad , 700=haftsad , 800= hashtsad , 900=nohsad ,
1000= hezar , 1,000,000 = million ,1,000,000,000=milliard

The above numbers are the main numbers in farsi with individual spell and

Other numbers are made from above numbers.

examples :

22 = 20 + 2 = bist o do , 54= 50+4 = pangah o chahar, 99= 90+9=navad o noh
68= 60+8=shast o hasht ,

370= 300+70 = sisad o haftad , 459=400+50+9=chaharsad o pangah o noh
999= 900+90+9=nohsad o navad o noh , 121=100+20+1=sad o bist o yek
113= 100+13= sad o sizdah , 219 = 200+19=devist o nozdah ,
416=400+16 = chaharsad o shanzdah

8000=8(1000) = hasht hezar , 10000=10(1000)=dah hezar , 100,000=100(1000)=sad hezar , 400,000=400(1000)=chaharsad hezar
1212= 1000+200+12= hezar o devist o davazdah , 5467=5 (1000)+400+60+7 = pang hezar o chaharsad o shat o haft , 12000=12(1000)=davazdah hezar

11200= 11(1000)+200=yazdah hezar o devist

12216= 12(1000)+200+16= davazdah hezar o devist o shanzdah
45815=(40+5)1000+800+15=chehel o pang hezar o hasht sad o panzdah
99540=(90+9)1000+500+40=navad o noh hezar o pansad o chehel


456210=(400+50+6)1000+200+10= charhar sad o pangah o shesh hezar o devist o dah
616318=(600+16)1000+300+18= sheshsad o shanzdah hezar o sisad o hegdah

5000000= 5(1000000)= pang million
45000000=(40+5)1000000= chehel o pang million

Well you can see the numbers in farsi are very simple and you learn all them

Laura, i like this song as well. and i found your comparison of kamran and hooman as "the jackson twins" just hilarious! (though i must admit, i am a fan of their music)
