**** This is about drinking habit. You must eat something before drinking.

The saying "herring likes to swim" is quite international, it is just some jokingly made up excuse to drink some more after you had some fish to eat.

For me the same remark as for you in one of your other posts: if I only had found out sooner that this site / forum existed. I joined less than a week ago.

'From left to right' is more like one of proverbs or maybe toasts, I guess. There are some like after you drink the first one, they would try to make you drink the second one by saying 'This one for the other leg'... I think long ago there was a tradition to make such funny excuses to drink another glass:
ahuman has two legs
a clover has three leaves
a coach has four wheels
And so on.
