lol, Lady A---that's good to know, thanks for the comment. Please remember, though, that I am at least as interested in acquiring fluency in your language as I am in discovering new things about your culture at all levels; sometimes 'simple' songs like Cleopatra Stratan's fanciful & heavily rhythmic wordplays are very, very useful to a beginning speaker like myself, especially when it comes to perceiving the spoken word as for example when I listen to Romanian TV online, the news reports & so forth there (it goes by sooo fast!).

But rest assured that I am also very interested in more serious fare, however it is also true that I have no idea who the 'real artists' might be where Romanian music is concerned. Would you have some recommendations?

Lastly, for what it's worth, I had a chance to speak some Romanian on webcam with one of my best friends over there in Bucuresti the other day; I've never seen her smile so much or so brightly.

For your question regarding that verse, the word is YOU.

And, as Lady A, has already said: FINALLY a real Romanian artist, cause among all the translations we perform around here, just few of them are songs that at least I, personally, listen.

Now, for the other two songs. Those are, indeed, traditional Romanian songs and sung around Christmas. Carols, but old and classical ones, very beautiful and veeeeryyy difficult to translate in another language(especially English which sometimes is so poor when it comes to vocabulary). Paula Seling is an exceptional artist when it comes to singing these kind of songs, and just in case you like this traditional Christmas songs, you may want to google for Stefan Hrusca, another great artist.

The Romanian word for carol is colind (colinde-plural) and if you go on youtube and serach for Stefan Hrusca colinde you'll have plenty of listening to do

And now, I'll be bold enough to try and translate the two carols you requested.

Wherever you see the *, that word is actually a diminutive of the regular word. In some cases I was able to give the meaning by using the word “little” before, but in other cases, that was impossible cause it makes no sense in English( like cotton, for example, I don’t know how I can find an English eqivalent of the diminutive of cotton!!!!).

In Romanian we use diminutives of words when we speak in an affectionate way especially to or in relation to children. It’s kind of a “maternal” way of speaking, of spoiling the child in a verbal way, or to show affection by using diminutives of …almost everything that can have a diminutive. The funny part is that if there isn’t a diminutive of that word, we make it up!!! LOL! Because diminutives actually consist in certain endings we add to the words and by playing with those endings you can actually make a diminutive of many words, nouns and adjectives mostly.

Now, ziurel de ziua is almost impossible to translate. Basically it means day dawn/daybreak.
Ziua-day
Ziurel-is a…diminutive(YES!) of ziua. Together they have the following relation: Ziurel OF day. Ziurel( a smaller morning—which is to actually mean an earlier morning, an earlier part of the morning aka dawn) OF day= I address to the very first part of the day, the very first moment of dawn, and I address it in an affectionate way, as I consider it a “baby” of the day.

Now, if there’s anything you didn’t understand, just say it.

"On Christmas Eve, groups of children or men go to the other village houses and sing traditional carols named colinde. These carols have kept until our days the oldest form of the Romanian folk poetry. These songs communicate wishes of health, good harvests, handsome young men and beautiful working girls, marriages, success in various occupations the major problems of the peasant's life.

The name of colinda comes from the Latin calendae. At Romans, the calendae were the first days of each month. Calendae Ianuarii marked the beginning of the new administrative year. On this occasion, wishes were sent, gifts were given and the future was predicted. In the Eastern Roman Empire especially, people disguised themselves."
