Hey, I'm from Romania, where live a lot of gypsies, (maybe the most of them), but I can tell you SPECIFIC songs in Romani are very rare, the gypsies here sing in Romanian on songs stolen from our Bulgarian, Greeek, Turkish and Arabic neighbours. ))
There are so few original artists...
For example Damian Draghici, he is pretty known (look in wikipedia or google)...
or the group "Fanfara Zece Prajini" (romanian name)... And many minor and anonim grups.
Hi razny, thanks for your answer. As a matter of fact I need songs gypsies usu
ally sing.
These songs you wrote about , the " stolen " songs probably would help me, if you could name some.
If I can find famous songs gypsies usually sing, it will help.
It is a very difficult subject for a brazillian person to search, as I do not have much information on this subject.
Gypsy culture is almost unknown in Brazil.
Thanks for the link you sent me, I´ll check it right now.
If you interested in brazilian music, just let me know!!
Bye
Hmmm... From my humble knowledge on this subject I can say that are some songs that gypsies sing and the rest of the world doesn't know about it, because they weren't collected in an anthropological way, and there are songs that are produced or sang in a public way.
You have here some examples:
"famous" or notorious singer among Romanians, Nicolae Guta...

When you search on youtube, type "tiganeste" or "tiganeasca" to find gypsy music (that means gypsy in Romanian, we call the gypsies "tigan(i)" from Greek term "athiganos"=not to be touched, unpure, unchristian).
Listen to some Romanian music in order to be able to distinguish between a gypsy song that doesn't state that is gypsy and a Romanian "manea" (a song that I told you that is stolen, usually with Oriental musical influences), or just ask me what type of song is the one that you found. Good luck.
As I see this introduction I think that maybe you search for Spanish Gypsy music , that is a different type of Gypsy music comparing to our Central European Gypsy music... Our Gypsy sing their songs with a band, usually a guy with a violin (a must )) ), a classical bass, an organ, an harmonica and maybe a sax or other instruments...
I also say to listen to Taraful din Clejani. Please forget about Guta...
Another music style performed by gypsies is "muzica lautareasca" performed by lautari .
It's performed in Romanian not Romani.
The most famous of this genre were Romica Puceanu & Gabi Lunca.
Like Razvy said it's had to find authentic Romani songs ...
Here you'll find more informatuon about lautari :

And some songs:

Nice piece of information, Crisa, you really know some stuffs on this subject. :P I forgot about Taraful din Clejani, but I thinked that this "Lautari" sing a more cosmopolite musical style, and like you said, is in Romanian, not in Romales.
We'll see what our Brazilian guest wishes. But we invite him here in Romania to see with his eyes our great music and our positive achievements...
Thanks for all the information razvy2 and Crisa. I checked all the links. Guta´s performance is funny but I´m looking for something with more soul. I´m interested in eastern styles, as they are very rare around here.People in Brazil know nothing about all this. You are my very first source of information and now, thanks to you I have new key-words to research. And thanks for inviting me to Romania; this was already in my plans, as this research refers to a movie, and that will probably make me travel a lot. The wikipedia link is very good, and opened my perception to differentiate styles. More infos on these styles will be highly praised.
Thanks. Well the "real muzica lautaresca " is very beautiful , and yeah it's performed in Romanian but they are gypsies. And I prefer it instead of Guta music which I hate , sorry I had to tell it.
Yes he'll be welcomed in Romania. I'm sure he'll find a lot of material for his projects.
