Hi all. Just stumbled onto this site which is a real treat as, at my age, I forget my own name nevermind who sang what. These Lyrics are what I remember from an old 78 record played on a Victrola wind up. Could it be Josephine Baker? Obliged for any help.
‘Back in eleven hundred AD
I was a perfect Lay-de,
And when my husband’s charms were fading
He went away Crusading.
Went away to war and left me flat
I did not have time to think of that
War, war only war I knew
But there was work that only woman can do.
So, while the others were bally-hooing
Night and day I was doing
Quiet little acts of Charity
And what do you think they called me?
Public Sweetheart number One
Loved by every Mother’s son
Whilst my Old Man was away
I did one good deed each day.
When the New Year’s Honours came
I refused the Rank of Dame
For I had much more good clean fun
As Public Sweetheart number One.
When a Crusader went Crusading he had his girl encased in
Some little bits of his old armour he knew she would be chaste in.
When the village Blacksmith hammered me
Into my new set of lingerie
Though I thrilled at the way it shone
I felt funny with a padlock on.
Then there was reference to Richard the Lion Hearted coming up to her and the lines
How on earth could I forsee
He posessed a master key?
So I looked at him and sighed
Ha Cha cha cha
I’m fortified!
