Default [2/5 SOLVED] 5 pop songs with few clues, part C

Here's the 3rd part of this thread of mine, for songs I heard in Washington state in 2009 that would be nice to identify. The 2nd part of this thread was very successful, in my opinion: I found 2 new ones, thanks to IDs people came up with. Again, these are relatively low priority to me, though, so please don't knock yourself out over them.

    (1) "it's only love" [IDENTIFIED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE]

high-range male singer in a band like Journey or Jefferson Starship (same kind of vocals, style, and instruments)
lyrics I wrote down: "it's only love"
This was played in an Office Depot store. That chain has their own in-store music programming.

This post is a long shot but it was a good, moving song that would be great to find.

Here's the most recent Google search string I used:

lyrics "it's only love" -beatles -adams -"simply red" -nicks -zz -elvis -vassar -perry -crow -sade -def -nova -hilton -turner -maura -cocker -dobson -cheap -buffy -taylor

    UNHEARD:
It's Only Love (The Ben Taylor Band)
    It's Only Love (Dark Illumination)

    HEARD BUT UNLIKELY:
    It's Only Love (Bryan Adams)
It's Only Love (Bryan Adams & Tina Turner)
    It's Only Love (Cheap Trick)

    HEARD AND NOT:
    First Love (The Maccabees)
    It's Only Love (The Beatles)
    It's Only Love (Buffy)
    It's Only Love (Joe Cocker)
    It's Only Love (Sheryl Crow)
    It's Only Love (Def Leppard)
    It's Only Love (Amy Dobson)
It's Only Love (Tyler Hilton) - Beatles remake
It's Only Love (Mimi Maura) - Beatles remake
    It's Only Love (Elvis Presley)
    It's Only Love (Heather Nova)
    It's Only Love (Simply Red)
    It's Only Love (Stevie Nicks)
    It's Only Love (Steve Perry)
It's Only Love That Gets You Through (Sade)
    It's Only Love (Phil Vassar)
    It's Only Love (ZZ Top)

    (2) "nothin' but" [IDENTIFIED]

    V I chord progression
    whistled intro
    male singer
lyrics I wrote down: "nothin' but", "deep in ?our ?minds", "?lassie ?oh ?mine"

Other songs played that day in the same Burgerville, to give an idea of their repertoire:

All Night Long (Lionel Richie, 1983)
    Right As Rain (Adele, 2008)
    Nightshift (The Commodores, 1985)
    Peg (Steely Dan, 1977)
To Be Still (Alela Diane, 2009, "To Be Still" album)
It's All Over (Sugar Ray, 2001, "Sugar Ray" album)
Stop Running Away (Brenda Russell, 1990, "Kiss Me With The Wind" album)

    (3) "I don't want you"

    male singer
    lyrics I wrote down: "I don't want you, I don't want you.", "I don't love you anymore", "and I"

This was played in a barbeque restaurant that was playing only classic oldies from the '60s, so almost certainly this song is from the '60s. Other songs played that same place that same day:

    Daddy's Home (Shep & The Limelites, 1961)
Where The Boys Are (Connie Francis, 1960)
    Lightning Strikes (Lou Christie, 1965)
Surfer Girl (The Beach Boys, 1963)
Windy (The Association, 1967, "Insight Out" album)
    Memphis (Johnny Rivers, 1964)

    (4) "take another drive for a while"

    female singer
lyrics I wrote down:"take another ?drive for a while", "what do I do", "situation's callin' for more than I got", "even though I know", "leads to happy families", "I'm sure"

Those should be a sufficient number of lyrics, but I must have some of them wrong, or maybe the song is obscure, or something, since I'm having a hard time finding it.

Here are the results of my Google searches so far...

    NOT:

    Circus (Britney Spears)
    Circus Song (Don McLean)

    (5) "don't make me forget you"

This is another long shot. It was played in a camera store.

    male singer, middle range vocals
lyrics I wrote down: "don't make me forget you"

This had a distinctive, live, early '70s mildly distorted guitar sound, like played through Fender amps, like you might hear in a live recording by The Rolling Stones, Traffic, Eric Clapton, Ballin' Jack, It's A Beautiful Day, etc. The speed was like pop or slow rock, the guitar distortion was like pop or blues, and the band had a relatively primitive sound without keyboards, strings, vocal harmonies, female vocalists, etc.

    Many thanks for that ID!

Here are the actual lyrics at the parts where I wrote them down...

Past the silver bridge, oh the silver bridge,
Wearing nothing but a onesie and a veil.
    ...
    Ooh, deep in a mine,
    Ooh, calcium mine.
Arm and arm, we are the harmless sociopaths.

That's an *extremely* good guess, but unless I wrote the lyrics down wrong, I don't think that's it. The song you suggested never says "Don't make me forget you", only "Don't make me a target" many times. Also, I *think* the song I heard was a little slower, and probably had an extended guitar lead in it. However, the sound in that Spoon song is *very* close to what I remember. Thanks for the great suggestion. You know your stuff, that's for sure.

    Junior:

No: way too slow and soft.

    Fukuyama Masaharu:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJB_U7y9gSg
No: my song was all in English and had a more rockish sound.

    Tim McGraw and Faith Hill:

I don't think so, but that's roughly the right kind of sound. I'm pretty sure my song didn't have a female singer in it, though.

Lifehouse (I am falling even more in love with you)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noP33JJbZoA
No: my song had much higher vocals, and was more symphonic and less grungy.

My mystery song sounded more majestic/symphonic/rockish, with high, poignant, male vocals, something more like:

Stone in Love (Journey, 1981, "Escape" album)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFqXFE8OSG4

Oh Sherrie (Steve Perry, 1984, "Street Talk" album)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysTjJaYX0WA

Find Your Way Back (Jefferson Starship, 1981, 'Modern Times" album)

Thanks very much for your suggestions, though.

Excellent guess. All the lyrics match, except for one thing: I *believe* the phrase "I don't want you, I don't want you" was repeated like that twice, immediately, otherwise there would have been no point in my writing it down twice like that, one after the other. I wish there were an online version of this I could hear. Your suggestion's lyrics are so darned close that I'd like to think that's the correct song, but I just don't know yet. Thanks anyway. Let me check into finding an audio version of this somewhere before I rule out your great suggestion.

The YouTube link I posted should have an audio version. But it's likely not the song considering the album was released in 2002...
Ramones - I Don't Want You http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0C3RCOasxg also has very similar lyrics and is closer to the time period you are looking for.

Yes, I agree. I listened to your audio link, and even if the lyrics had matched up 100%, phrase-for-phrase, I'd still be looking for an earlier '60s version of it. All the songs played there that night ranged from 1960-1967, most from the early '60s, and I recognized all except for 2 songs. (I'll post the 2nd unidentified song from that set in my upcoming part D post.) All songs I recognized were well-known '60s classics, so it's very likely the 2 missing songs are also well-known '60s classics. The Ramones don't sound '60s-ish to me, so I probably would have recognized that anomaly right away and would have made a note of it if I'd heard that Ramones song there. Thanks for your ongoing efforts, though.

No--neither is fast enough or in the style I remember.

    Atlantic
Aha. OK, I'm going to give you credit for finding my mystery song since this song is so close to what I remember that I'll never know for sure if that's the one or not, especially with so few clues. At the very least, you found a good song in the same style I remember. Thanks for your perseverance, which paid off!

    The Gurus
No--looks like they're lip synching to The Beatles song.

    Blodwyn Pig
No--that's a blues chord progression, which I would have recognized, and I know it wasn't a blues progression.

    B.J. Thomas
No--wrong style, and I already know his voice well.

OK, so thanks to Th3Diplomat for likely identifying the song as much as possible as "It's Only Love" by Atlantic!

Good point. I think it was very modern, like 2000s or maybe 1990s or even late 1980s--Sheryl Crow / Britney Spears / Avril Lavigne / k.d. lang / Amie Grant / Jordin Sparks / Crowded House type stuff. Burgerville mostly played songs from the last few years, with a few oldies to appease the older folks. I forgot to mention: it was played the same day and in the same place as #2, so that song list for Burgerville in #2 is exactly the same as for #3.
