I thought I found the translation but some of the lyrics are different. . .

Even though there are little differences between the text already translated and this one, the meaning stays the same:

Tu si' 'na cosa grande pe' mme
You are a great thing for me
'na cosa ca me fa nnammura'
that makes me fall in love
'na cosa ca si tu guard''a mme
    if you look at me
    je me ne moro accussi'
    I die like this
    guardanno a tte
    looking at you

vurria sape' 'na cosa da te
I would like to know something from you
pecche' quanno i' te guardo accussi'
why when I look at you like this
si pure tu te siente 'e muri'
    you too feel like dying
    nun m''o ddice
    you don't tell me
e nun m''o faje capi', ma pecche'.
and you don't make me understand, but why

    e dillo 'na vota sola
    say it just one time
    si pure tu staje tremmanno
    if you too are trembling
    dillo ca me vuoi bene
    tell me you love me
    comm'io, comm'io,
like I do, like I do
    comm'io voglio bene a tte...
    like I love you...

tu si' 'na cosa grande pe' mme
you're a great thing for me
'na cosa ca tu stessa nun saje
so great that even you don't know
'na cosa ca nun aggio avuto maje
someone for whom I have never had
    nu bene accussi', accussi' grande...
    such a great love...

    e dillo 'na vota sola
    say it just one time
    si pure tu staje tremmanno
    if you too are trembling
    dillo ca me vuoi bene
    tell me you love me
    comm'io, comm'io,
like I do, like I do
    comm'io voglio bene a tte...
    like I love you...

tu si' 'na cosa grande pe' mme
you're a great thing for me
'na cosa ca tu stessa nun saje
so great that even you don't know
'na cosa ca nun aggio avuto maje
someone for whom I have never had
    nu bene accussi',
    such a great love...
    accussi’ grande
    so great
    accussi’ grande
    so great
    accussi’ grande
    so great

I have a question. Since the text says voglio bene instead of ti amo does it mean love as a friend or a lesser type of love?

Usually "ti voglio bene" means "I care for you" and it's said between friends/family members, while "ti amo" means "I love you" and it's said between lovers.

Given the context, I'd say it means "I love you" here.
