Question Kali – Falshiva (BG > EN)

    Български to English please

I didn’t steal like they say (I did)
    твоето сърце,
    your heart
    и не плаках както други
and I didn’t cry like the others
    плачат днес за теб.
    are crying today for you.
    Не излъгах че умирам
    I didn’t lie I was dying
    и не те проклех
    and I didn’t curse you
    от раните не те намразих
I didn’t hate you for the wounds (you caused me)
    мразя само мен.
    I hate only myself

    Ще ти кажа как минава
I will tell you how I spend (how it passes)
    всеки глупав ден,
    every stupid day,
    как фалшива се събуждам
how I wake up - fake
    жалка и за мен.
    pathetic even to me.
    По навик сега живея
    By habit I live now
    все едно с кого
regardless with whom (i.e. she doesn’t care with whom)
    очите ми са вечно празни,
    my eyes are always empty
    празни без любов.
    empty without love.

    Припев:
    Лъжа цял живот,
    I lie all my life,
    ставам по - добра.
    I’m getting better at it.
    В чуждите легла
    In other people’s beds
    търся теб сега.
    I look for you now.
    Лъжа цял живот
    I lie all my life
    празен и фалшив,
    empty and fake (her life),
    как поне не се излъгах
if I could have at least fooled myself
    че не ме боли. /x2
    that I’m not hurting.

    Ако сметна колко струват
If I calculate how much they cost
    моите лъжи,
    my lies,
    ще си купя малко време
I will buy myself some time
    да се върнеш ти,
    so you can come back,
    Ако още беше вчера
    If it was still yesterday
    щях да прокълна
    I would curse
    лъжите си и твойте нощи
    my lies and your nights
    изгорени там.
    burnt there.

I like these lyrics here to train my Bulgarian skills with help and control of your English version and will try to add one German version later. Thanks a lot for translation and translating notes, Narkissos!

I didn’t steal like they say (I did)
Ich habe nicht, wie sie (es) sagen,
    твоето сърце,
    your heart
    dein Herz gestohlen

как поне не се излъгах --->word for word it is:how at least I didn't lie to myself

This is confusing in English.Because she really means:I wish I'd lied to myself/convinced myself or I wish I'd managed to fool myself that I'm not hurting.

че не ме боли = that I’m not hurting/that it's not hurting me/that I don't feel (the) pain----> My German is very rusty but ''dass es mich nicht schmerzt'' sounds better to me.

    Useful at all?

Sorry Narkissos, you are really very attentive and I would gladly like to give you a response, but my head smokes like a chimney. Tonight it's to late for my bad Bulgarian. I'll try to understand tomorrow. I can catch no more thoughts in my mind now.

Especially the doubled negation causes me trouble: как поне не се излъгах че не ме боли

I understand the meaning because of your English translation and explanations now, but I can't read it in the original so far.

I hope the enlightenment comes with dawn

Bye for now and many thanks!

One rule you have to remember is that we always have double negation. For example in english when you ask someone "What are you doing" he says "I don't do anything" or "I do nothing" but in bulgarian we say "Не правя нищо, which in english means literally "I don't do nothing".

Mozart, mitko92 is making a very good point. It's probably the double negation that's giving you a headache.
    And you're always welcome.

Thank you both very much. Maybe two troubles are interfering here, that make my feel for language failing. A simple double negation such as "Не правя нищо" is not such a big problem for German native speakers, since it occurs also in German regional dialects and non-written or non-standard language, similar to English ("We don't need no education. We don't need no mind control"). But in connection with "как" I'm really despairing of the sentence "как поне не се излъгах че не ме боли"

Now I checked a further BG > DE dictionary and found "как не те видях" translated to "warum habe ich dich nicht gesehen" (why did I not see you) and to "wie konnte es kommen, dass ich dich nicht gesehen habe" (how could it come, that I did not see you).

Can I translate "как поне не се излъгах че не ме боли" to "warum habe ich mich nicht wenigstens (selbst) belogen, dass es mich nicht schmerzt" ("why did I not lie myself at least, that it doesn't hurts me")?

    Or is this wrong

It's not wrong. If you insist on there being a ''how'' in the English try this:
(Oh) how could I not, at least, lie to myself (a little) that I'm not in pain, that I'm not hurting.

Bottom line is there are many ways to translate it that convey the meaning. And the ''kak'' you will just have to accept as a peculiarity of the language
Also let's not forget that song lyrics and poems are a special case.

Now it became clear and I'm happy and pleased, you told me this :

Actually each translation request of mine splits into two intentions:
    - First I want to know, what is said (for this one free and one literal translation into English are both a good help)
    - With help of this secondly I try to find out, how it is said (for this I need to develope a deeper and general knowledge and feeling for Bulgarian thoughts and words, semantics, grammar and phrases)
This second point is my part and you can help only a little. But it was the reason, why I insisted to understand BG lyrics, not the English one.

Be sure I don't wish Bulgarian language to change at all, I just wish my Bulgarian language feel to change and develope

Ok good because I'm never sure if these convoluted sentences help or impede understanding

And I understand you completely.Music is a good way to improve your understanding of a foreign language.

This is why I am often torn between doing a more literal (word for word) translation and one that sounds better.Because each is useful in its own way.
