Default Who sang the 70s song "Something To Believe In"?

(or maybe "You Give Me Something To Believe In")

Sample verse (which didn't sound as icky at the time as it does now):

People that I meet are sometimes less than kind
To them I'm just a lonely fool on nowhere street
You are in my heart and in my mind
All I need is you to make my life complete.

You can make the world seem like a friend with just a smile
You make life worth living when I'm with you for a while
You can take a rainy day and chase the clouds away
    I need you
You give me something to believe in
You give me something to believe in oh-wo.

    Effus Moseley - Give Me Something To Believe In {1971}

    Label: Sunflower 115

Thanks a lot to everyone for the suggestions above. This one sounds like the most likely. The date is three years earlier than when I was hearing the song on the radio, but I guess it could have taken time to get going. It got a lot of play on at least one L.A. station, but since it was only a single and no album followed I guess Moseley was a one-hit (or quasi-hit) wonder.

All these years I'd been assuming the artist was Austin Roberts since around the same time, on the same station, I was hearing a song by him called "Something's Wrong with Me" which had much the same sound and a refrain with almost the identical tune. Since it came out in '72 I'm tempted to wonder if Mr. Roberts ripped Moseley off (unless he was moonlighting under that pseudonym). But in Googling Moseley I find that Billboard reported his signing for the single in November '71, so the record probably wouldn't have come out until the following year. Probably just a musical coincidence.

Anyhow, now I know the name. Thanks very much!

Default Assuming anyone is still reading this...

I'm surprised after all these years nobody has the answer...

It's "Somethin' to Believe In" by Austin Roberts. A blatant rewrite of his first top fifteen hit, "Something's Wrong With Me". The suits at Chelsea Records were unhappy with how his recent records were performing and felt he should record something more along those lines, so he wrote new lyrics to the same tune (leaving the same writer credit from the original intact in case nobody got the message) and put it out as a single (Chelsea BOC0-0219) in early 1974. That's what happens when you f*** with a Southern boy, folks. (And in a final middle fingered salute to Chelsea staff, it flopped - just as Austin intended.)

    Hope this helps,
    Joe
