desperately seeking song

my sister was involved in an accident which has left her tetraplegic.as most can guess this has left her depressed but if i could find a certain song,i know it would cheer her up as she had been looking for almost a year with no luck.my mum used to play her it and sing it to her when she was little.
dont know the title or the artist and mum cant remember but here goes....
it is from 70s possibly 80s (sis was born in 76),
i know its a male singer(mum is convinced its tom jones),
i think it was a love ballad,
the only line we can recall is "there was a girl called marrianne" but "marrianne" may have been spelt maryann, mary ann,maryanne or any other way of spelling it.
