(*my guess is that this line should be more properly written as 'Dar totul straluceste ca-n tr-un show de zile mari'?)

As mentioned, I think some of the markings (contraction forms) are incorrect though.

The words appear simple, but as so often with Romanian (for us Americans anyway), deceptively simple?

My attempt:


As long as I can remember, the rain has fascinated me
[second line I have no idea, "fata" here is girl, or face? the marking and 'racoroasa'--cool? cooling?--confuses me]
How it touches all the tired, too crowded city
When it rains everyone is upset that I say "Oh what a beautiful day!"

Chorus:
The rain is my friend,
Its velvety garment
Delicately touches me
The rain is my friend,
It's [don't know the word "neastamparata"--Grrr!]
lightly falls, it's a miracle.

When we [wonder?] and ask why
such a downpour
She answers that [???]
I live in the clouds!

I have to say, it was really kind of a joy looking through your corrections and explanatory notes, I kept feeling like 'Ah HA!' at each different mystery solved, these had really been bugging me. It was like the picture on a jigsaw puzzle suddenly making sense after trying quite hard to figure out how & where some of the pieces were supposed to fit into place.

It is difficult for me to hear all the little nuances of spoken (or sung, heh) Romanian, especially where one word ends and a new one begins at times.

I had wondered a little if the 'fata' might be a play on overlapping meanings/pronunciations, as we have quite often in English poetry or song lyrics, but I understand now.

I think you should try to find lyrics that have the diacritics or just for them here . In this way you'll learn the words better (I don't know how advanced you are in learning Romanian ).

I know it's difficult to hear all the words in spoken language or in songs , it happened to be when learning English .

Thanks for the advice Crisa. Usually I do try to stick with lyrics using the diacritics, I couldn't find these anywhere online however, maybe I just missed.

Also I don't really know how advanced is my Romanian either, I suspect not so much though. I can read more than I can understand by listening, but looking at some of the Ro entertainment/movie sites is quite different from reading one of the Ro financial newspapers, for sure.

Lately I've been watching as many Romanian movies as I can, this helps in a different way than do the lyrics.

Yes , you're right the language used in entertaining and the one used in financial sites is different. That happens in English too, and in other languages.
Yes , movies are great for learning .Especially for word pronunciation .
