Question the impossible has finally arrived

I joined this space on Aug 5th, and have been reading and even answering a few of the inquiries.

Now I am putting forth a challenge.................in the early 70's when i was a young girl...there was a really pretty albiet sad song being played.

My mother says that I am nuts and no such song exists.......

    But I know better............

It is a song about a young man, possibly a young couple, who see an old organ grinder with a monkey that danced......
The latter part of the song contains the line.......I went back/down to the corner to hear the old man play, a policeman said the old man died one cold (November) day........and then says something else about the monkey who had a little cup of tin, that dance for joy when someone put a penny in for him..

I've tried every possible resource I know of... so if you have any info, music or lyrics let me know....my proof of sanity is on your shoulders.

Is it ..The Organ grinder by Frank Mills ?

    Standing on a corner
    Passing time away
I thought I heard an organ grinder
    Singing as he played
    He had a little monkey
With a little cup of tin
    And he danced for joy
hen someone put a penny in

He sang, love me, love me, love
Why did you ever leave me, girl
If you love me, love me, love
    Why did you ever go
If you love me, love me, love
Why did you ever leave me, girl
If you love me, love me, love
    Why did you ever go

    I couldn't help but wonder
How the old man got his song
What a tragic tale of loneliness
How fate had done him wrong
    Whatever made the old man
Want to brave the cold and rain
And tell the world his story
'Til death could ease the pain

He sang, love me, love me, love
Why did you ever leave me, girl
If you love me, love me, love
    Why did you ever go
If you love me, love me, love
Why did you ever leave me, girl
If you love me, love me, love
    Why did you ever go

I went back to the corner
Just to hear the old man play
A policeman said the old man died
    One cold November day
    I waited for a minute
    Then sadly walked away
Though I couldn't see the old man
I'm sure I heard him play

He sang, love me, love me, love
Why did you ever leave me, girl
If you love me, love me, love
    Why did you ever go
If you love me, love me, love
Why did you ever leave me, girl
If you love me, love me, love
    Why did you ever go

    Hope this restores your sanity

just a quick update, i found the song itself also, finally, on limewire.
however it was not liseted under its true title, it is listed as "Love Me, Love Me, Love.

    Thanks again Lobs.
