BEING A MAN

I woke up one morning, I was so happy,
With a feeling of beautiful peace inside,
I said to my father with an increasing emotion,
"""Dad, last night I had an awesome dream,
That a shower-like light covered my soul
and made me feel something big and different.
I dreamt last night, ¡Oh Father, that I was a man already!."""

But my father made a grimace with his beloved face,
Then, with a soft voice, he said, trying not to hurt me,
"""Son, don´t be so confident, that is not a big thing.
Your clean soul of a child doesn´t yet understand;
Man is mean sometimes, not everything in him is good;
Man is a liar, deceives, and steals from his friends;
Man kills and harms people and animals only for pleasure"""

He saw me at last, I felt he was so sorry. He looked into my eyes,
trying to see some deception or anger.

But I turned up my face to him, and told him so convinced,
"""No Father. The things you´ve just told me, those aberrations.
¡ That huge vanity and wickedness, that we hate !,
that dear Daddy, that is not to be a man.

SER HOMBRE

Desperté una mañana, muy alegre,
con una sensación de paz hermosa,
dije a mi padre con emoción creciente
- papá, anoche tuve un sueño inefable,
un sueño que ha bañado de luz mi alma
y me hizo sentir algo grande y diferente,
soñé anoche padre mío que era ya un hombre.

Frunciendo un poco el ceño de su rostro amado
Dijo con voz calmada, tratando de no herirme
- hijo, no te confíes, eso no es la gran cosa,
tu alma limpia de niño aún no comprende.
El hombre es malo a veces, no todo en él es bueno,
el hombre miente, engaña y roba a sus amigos,
el hombre mata y daña por el placer de hacerlo.

Me vio al final contrito, buscando ver mis ojos,
esperando mostrara mi decepción o enojo.

Pero yo, alzando el rostro, le dije convencido,
- no padre, eso que dices, esas aberraciones,
todas esas maldades vanas y execrables
eso padre querido, eso no es ser hombre.

Very personal stuff,ay mexico62.You always told me (via your Replies)that you appreciate poems that rhyme.In Spanish I assume the verses do, in fact,rhyme.Since Im not as versitile as you and only speak English,I'll Comment strictly on the content.Being let down by one's father is nothing new.Ask Opedipus Rex.You open your heart and soul to him and he slaps you down.Pointing out the good in man and receiving a negative reply is common among Macho men.I call it insecurity.I think,especially for a first try,it's pretty amazing.I look forward to the time you've mastered English,you'll be someone to reckon with!I wish you luck,but don't think you'll need it.Bravo,amigo

Thanks for your comments, I hope I can upgrade my english to make translations with rhymes, but for the moment I only try to translate them to let you know at leat their meaning. I hope I can post more and you be so kind to correct me, as you see I edit the wrong "whit", thanks again, and please keep helping me. Gracias amigo

I worked to translate this poem because is not so dificult for the rhymes, I have others that make rhyme in each ending, but when I can improve my english I hope I will give you a good quality translation of my other poems with rhymes in english, thanks again, saludos.

So do I, Mexico. This poem at least reminds me so much of the ignorant father-taken-for-granted son attitude reflected so often - as Doug correctly mentioned- in one word Macho
