(Here's a cruelly difficult one for you. I've heard this song once in my entire life, and the only reason there's a chance is that quite a few of the lyrics stuck

I heard it in the late eighties/early nineties.
Single male vocalist, from what I could tell. Low, soft voice, at least in this song.
Music was piano/keyboard/acoustic guitar, little or no percussion.
