    Chamava-se ela Maria,
    De sobrenome da Cruz,
E na aldeia onde ela vivia, sorria
    Vivia na paz de Jesus
Tinha um amor, a quem ela
    Seu coraēćo entregara
    Junto ao altar da capela
    Singela, onde ela
    Paixćo lhe jurara!

    Mas certo dia
    Veio saber-se na aldeia
Que o seu pastor lhe mentia,
    Que esse amor se extinguia
Como a luz de uma candeia!
Desiludida do seu amor, a Maria
    Deixou o lar e, perdida,
    Saiu dali desvanecida
    Foi pro cais da Mouraria!

    Sofreu a dor d“amargura,
    Perdeu o viēo e a cor.
    E nćo voltou ą ventura,
    Ą docura, ą ternura,
    Do amor do pastor!
E hoje por cruz, a Maria,
Que é da Cruz, por seu fadįrio,
    Arrasta na Mouraria
    A cruz da agonia,
    A cruz do Calvįrio!

    Ainda canta
    Uma canēćo quase morta
    Traz o pastor na garganta,
    Oiēo jį, quando ela canta,
    Ao passar ą sua porta!
    Num certo dia
Em que ela, enfim, jį vencida,
    Terminarį a agonia
    De ainda estar na Mouraria
Toda a cruz da sua vida!

Very difficult translation. There is a wordplay between her family name da cruz (Cross) that also can be used in portuguese to express pain, suffering , agony etc.
Mouraria :The old Moorish quarter in Lisbon. It is famous because of its many tavernas and singers who live there
Anyway here is my try :

    She was called Mary
and Cross was her family name.
She was all smiles in the village where she was born
And had a quiet and peaceful life.
She had a love to whom she gave her heart
At the chapel's altar where she promised to love him

So one day at the village,
she was told that her shepherd was lying to her.
And his passion was dying slowly as the light of a candle.
So Mary became disappointed with him
Abandoned her home and feelling lost
left her village looking pale and weak
And went to the mouraria wharf

She has suffered a long and bitter pain
has lost her freshness , became pallid
And has lost all the happiness
    the sweetness,the tenderness
    Of the shepherd's love
And Today Mary, whose last name is cross,
Has a heavy cross to bear at the mouraria wharf :
The cross of agony,The cross of Calvary!

She still sings a faint and soft song
    Talking about her beloved shepherd.
I listen her singing when I pass in front of her door.
But one day she will pass away
And her agony of living in the wharf Will finally come to an end.
Because Mouraria was the greatest suffering of her life
