    Default LA ROMANCE DU VIN - Emile Nelligan

    Of all the Symbolist poets, the greatest Canadian poet by universal consent is Emile Nelligan. His "Romance Du Vin" is particularly haunting:

    Tout se mêle en un vif éclat de gaieté verte
    O le beau soir de mai ! Tous les oiseaux en choeur,
    Ainsi que les espoirs naguère à mon coeur,
    Modulent leur prélude à ma croisée ouverte.

    O le beau soir de mai ! le joyeux soir de mai !
    Un orgue au loin éclate en froides mélopées;
    Et les rayons, ainsi que de pourpres épées,
    Percent le coeur du jour qui se meurt parfumé.

    Je suis gai! je suis gai ! Dans le cristal qui chante,
    Verse, verse le vin ! verse encore et toujours,
    Que je puisse oublier la tristesse des jours,
    Dans le dédain que j'ai de la foule méchante !

    Je suis gai ! je suis gai ! Vive le vin et l'Art !...
    J'ai le rêve de faire aussi des vers célèbres,
    Des vers qui gémiront les musiques funèbres
    Des vents d'automne au loin passant dans le brouillard.

    C'est le règne du rire amer et de la rage
    De se savoir poète et objet du mépris,
    De se savoir un coeur et de n'être compris
    Que par le clair de lune et les grands soirs d'orage !

    Femmes ! je bois à vous qui riez du chemin
    Ou l'Idéal m'appelle en ouvrant ses bras roses;
    Je bois à vous surtout, hommes aux fronts moroses
    Qui dédaignez ma vie et repoussez ma main !

    Pendant que tout l'azur s'étoile dans la gloire,
    Et qu'un rythme s'entonne au renouveau doré,
    Sur le jour expirant je n'ai donc pas pleuré,
    Moi qui marche à tâtons dans ma jeunesse noire !

    Je suis gai ! je suis gai ! Vive le soir de mai !
    Je suis follement gai, sans être pourtant ivre !...
    Serait-ce que je suis enfin heureux de vivre;
    Enfin mon coeur est-il guéri d'avoir aimé ?

    Les cloches ont chanté; le vent du soir odore...
    Et pendant que le vin ruisselle à joyeux flots,
    Je suis gai, si gai, dans mon rire sonore,
    Oh ! si gai, que j'ai peur d'éclater en sanglot

    Happiness, light, life - all of this is concurrent
    On a beautiful May evening! Like the birds
    Who serenade their song through my window,
    So do my hopes resonate in my heart!

    O beautiful May evening! O happy May night!
    The miasma of the declining day is reflected
    In rays of sunlight that like daggers appear at
    The end with the sounds of sorrowful music!

    I'm happy! I'm happy! In a glass, there sings
    Songs of wine, songs of wine! Always songs
    Of wine that I want to forget with all my pain
    And the days of my existence upon this earth!

    I'm happy! I'm happy! Long live wine and art!
    My dreams are of songs that recall for me
    That which begins with the sad music of
    Autumn winds found on the distant horizon!

    In good company comes my cheerful madness,
    No one truly understands the soul of the poet,
    All that is in my heart is only rescued by the
    Moonlight and the fury of the dark nights!

    Women! I drink to you who art aloof from me,
    The arms of roses in my dream bid me welcome,
    And I also drink to men whose pride reveal their
    Contempt for my life and the works of my hand!

    My own youth conceals my weariness within;
    It cannot esteem the calm passing of the days,
    Rejoice in the sounds of the new-born spring
    And take in the heavenly firmament up above!

    I'm happy! I'm happy! Long live the May nights!
    Indeed, I'm sane and in truth am truly happy!
    Happiness of life as we all know, is for the living,
    And has cured my heart of the impossible love!

    The hours have passed by and the night air
    Makes me pour out the wine in sheer ecstasy
    I'm happy enough I want to cry with laughter -
    Yet I fear I shall surrender to the tears within me!
