As I collect old vinyl singles I happen to have this one of Richard Anthony, recorded in 1962. Anthony was born in 1938 in Egypt, Cairo
"100 miles" is the English title, known , amongst others by The Seekers and Peter Paul and Mary.

Noir Désir was imho one of the best French bands able to refute John Lennon's words when he said that « French rock is like English wine ».

A lot of their songs are committed against globalization, capitalism, fascism (Un jour en France, L'homme pressé, The holy economic war...). But this one is a tribute to … well I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Noir Désir – Marlène

[FmUsIfRm7Ew]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmUsIfRm7Ew

Oh Marlène
Les cœurs saignent
Et s'accrochent en haut
De tes bas
Oh Marlène
Dans tes veines
Coule l'amour
Des soldats
Et quand ils meurent ou s'endorment
C'est la chaleur de ta voix
Qui les apaise, et les traîne
Jusqu'en dehors des combats
Oh Marlène, c'est la haine
Qui nous a amené là
Mais Marlène, dans tes veines
Coulait l'amour des soldats
Eux quand ils meurent
Ou s'endorment
C'est dans le creux de tes bras
Qu'ils s'abandonnent
Et qu'ils brûlent
Comme un clope
Entre tes doigts
Hier und immer
Da kennt man sie
Kreuz unter Kreuzen
Marlene immer liebt
Oh Marlène
Hearts are bleeding
And hanging atop
Your stocking*
Oh Marlene
Through your veins
Is running
Soldiers' love
And when they're dying or falling asleep
It's the warmth of your voice
That calm them down, and drag them
Off the fights
Oh Marlene, hatred
Brought us here
But Marlene, through your veins
Was running soldiers' love
When they're dying
Or falling asleep
Into the hollow of your arms
They're sinking
And burning
Like a butt (of cigarette)
Between your fingers
Here and always
So they can know you
Cross amongst crosses
Marlene always loved

* in French, bas means both stocking and low

Jacques Brel spent the last years of his life on the Marquises, but visited also France and Belgium to record new songs in the studio, even though he was very ill (cancer). It is then he recorded amongst others this beautiful song:

Lââm - Petite Sœur

[U5eqyCw3qdQ]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5eqyCw3qdQ&feature=related

Little sister
I know your sorrow and your pain
Because I had the same in my heart
It's you and me, little sister

Little sister
I know how it burns inside
I had the time to learn from my mistakes
It's you and me, little sister
