Great lyrics!! It's no doubt that here in ATL, we are une foule sentimentale...

A solidarity song in the middle of the 20th century: Georges Brassens was a visionary in addition of being hell a of lyricist!

Here's another Georges, Giuseppe of his real name: Georges Moustaki.
Born in Alexandria from Greek parents speaking Italian, he's the definition itself of a cosmopolitan artist.

So... He came in Paris in 1951 and had some varied jobs, especially barman in a piano bar, which led him to hear our good old singer G. Brassens! For him it was a revelation. So it's no coincidence that he changed his name for Georges, and became a songwriter.

He first wrote this song for Serge Reggiani but Serge refused to sing the ballad (perhaps too much of a bohemian poet's biography). So Georges Moustaki did the cover, which became a success and boosted his career as a singer.

PAUL! You stole my next French singer, and I HAD DIBS ON HER OVER YOU, TOO! Do you know why? #1 - Because I like her more than you do and #2 She married the second most handsome man WHO JUST HAPPENS TO BE FROM KENTUCKY (guess who?? Initials J.D., as if YOU didn't know!)

And what an opening with such a beautiful song!! I'm not living in Paris but I like it a lot. No matter what you're looking for, if you're opening your heart and your eyes to its very special rhythm, you might certainly find it.

Thank you very much, Enoo! I think I've been to Paris 5 . . . maybe 6 times. I decided ahead of time that I KNEW I would not like it because EVERYBODY loves Paris and I wasn't "everybody"! HA! It took all of about 20 minutes for my heart to be stolen by that city!! "I love Paris in the springtime; I love Paris in the Fall; I love Paris . . . any time at all!!"

I wasn't sure if a Hebrew singer with a few words of French would qualify for your Francophile thread! But the topic was accurate.

Oui, oui, Mad·e·moi·selle . . . you choose your words so very "English" and proper so as not to insult!! I DO like me some strange music sometimes!!! It will stay unless someone tells me she's cursing like a sailor. I never know. Even in German (with which I am familiar) I do not know because I never learned curse words. . . . Usually, I just trust my beloved Turkish male singers to sing about their broken hearts and missing The Woman of Their Lives without profanity but with such blood and tears and loooooooonging (right, Paul?)!!! French . . . hmmmmm . . . new French music is just as likely to be rated "R" or "X" as some American music (but I'd never know it!)

Hmm, I would go for a "beau gosse" with its many declensions BG, beau goss, bogoss.
It's totally informal but not slang, you can call a well-known friend a BG (especially if he's dressed up for some occasion^^), or more simply a very handsome guy walking in the street. Also, it strictly describes the physical appearance of someone.

Hah! Ha! Enoo, that's too pefect. On ATL I call my DH (darling husband) "BG" often!! Now I will use it even more, although originally it stood for "Big Guy," because he is 6' 4", which I don't care to re-calculate to European measurements right now . . .

Ha! The trick is to choose a good time. Moi would choose June, especially around June 21st, when the entire la France celebrates la Fête de la Musique. This is pure magic, pardon, magique pure!

Paris in Winter is far from charming, though

Roger! Bad ove curse! However, truth has to be said that the French auteurs/singers can scribe lyrics that could be as much heart-rending. And to conclude: both French and Turkish songs (even if these are only pop songs) include a lot of poetic, imaginary writing. Bravo pour les deux pays!

To celebrate the end of this post, une chanson tres a propos:

Au contraire, Monsieur Orhan!! Twice I was in Paris in the Winter, and it was séduisant! Once was the 3rd week Décembre!!!

    _ _ _ _ _

    P.S. "dibs - noun plural \ˈdibz\

    Definition of DIBS

1 slang: money especially in small amounts

2 : claim, rights <I have dibs on that piece of cake> "

Meaning #2 has come to be #1; Merriam Webster Online has fallen behind the lingo...

You will never find that life for which you are looking.

Sad . . . many French songs posted on this thread say that "the uploader is not available in your country." However, if you have a great song and will write the artist's name and song title, we here in the U.S. can look it up on You Tube . . . Thank you.

The problem is not his accent, which sounds exotic for us francophones, but the lyrics he chose. We can feel it was not written in harmony with the music. His original version was so far better…
