Default 1970s song... only remember about 3 or 4 words

help me please. I heard a song this summer. It's a 1970s song. It's kinda mushy. I think one of the sentences mentions something about "being a working man" and "super star" towards the end of the song. The artist sounds like either the Bee Gees or Chicago, but I don't think its either of them. Thanks.

    Hi jpzero~

Really need more details! Rock? Pop? Country? A man singing, I assume, or not? Thanks and happy hunting!

Well, i was born on a sunday; on thursday i had me a job.
I was born on a sunday; by thursday i was workin' out on the job.
I ain't never had no day off since i learned right from wrong.

Mama said i was bad, i did something to her head.
Mama said i was bad, i did something to her head.
And poppa threw me out, ooh, said, "i gotta earn my own way."

    Chorus:
    I ain't never been in trouble;
    I ain't got the time.

I don't mess around with magic, child.
    What i got is mine.

Whatever you say, lord, well, that's what i'm gonna do.
Whatever you say, well, that's what i'm gonna do.
'cause i'm the working man, lord, and i do the job for you.

    Chorus

Every friday, well, that's when i get paid.
Don't take me on friday, lord, 'cause that's when i get paid.
Let me die on saturday night, ooh, before sunday gets my head.

I get up at seven, yeah
And i go to work at nine
I got no time for livin'
Yes, i'm workin' all the time

    It seems to me
    I could live my life
A lot better than i think i am
I guess that's why they call me
They call me the workin' man

They call me the workin' man
    I guess that's what i am

I get home at five o'clock

And i take myself out a nice, cold beer
    Always seem to be wond'rin'
Why there's nothin' goin' down here

    It seems to me
    I could live my life
A lot better than i think i am
I guess that's why they call me
They call me the workin' man

They call me the workin' man
    I guess that's what i am

Well they call me the workin' man
    I guess that's what i am

    Title: Workin' Man

    Sittin' alone in the dark,
Wastin' my time in a park
'cause i've got nowhere to go.
Had me a job til the market fell out,
Tried hard to borrow but there was no help
Now i've got nowhere to go.

I need a job for these two hands
    I'm a workin' man
    With nowhere to go

One last look at my land
Auctioneer with his gavel in hand
And he says "it's got to go."
Worked this peice all my life
It broke my heart and it took my wife
Now i've got nothing to show

I need a job for these two hands
    I'm a workin' man
    With nowhere to go

    Wandered aimless in the city

With my dirt workin' boots and my old straw hat in hand
Singing a song by woody guthrie
This land is your land; it ain't my land
I'm a workin' man, with nowhere to go

I was born to the sunrise
    Breaking back all day
Now i've got something to say
I am broke but not broken
    And i am not alone
Cause there's a lot of folks
    With nowhere to go

    Are they ever gonna understand?
You can't leave a workin' man
    With nowhere to go.

    Are they ever gonna understand?
You can't leave a workin' man
    With nowhere to go

Default I heard the song last June

Ok, I think time has distorted my memory. Other mentions I may have heard were "working late". . It's a long song (5 or 6 minutes) It's kinda like mixing the feel of "If you Leave Me Now" by Chicago and "Goodbye Yellowbrick Road" by Elton John. I've only heard this song 3 times in the last 7 years, so you can imagine the difficulty of this. I guess the genre is '70's Easy Listening. I enjoy anything from the '70s. I hope this clears this up somewhat.

    Hi jpzero~

OK, I'm gonna take a shot in the dark here! Your last post got me thinking about 2 songs in particular. I guess because you mentioned "If You Leave Me Now" and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" which have something interesting in common: leaving; saying goodbye; not being able to be with the one you love or loved; and the feelings surrounding loss, separation, choice, change, etc. They are both written in the narrative telling the one they love or have loved how they feel. Now the song you're trying to identify may or may not be a narrative but it's sort of suggested in the examples given. As I said, just trying to tell you how these songs I'm thinking of came to my mind.

Your clue that superstar may be in the song and near the end made me think that possibly your mind remembers that they want to be a superstar, though they may not have actually said it (again, that word may actually be in the song you're thinking of, this is just my mind thinking of how I've remembered or identified songs that I was trying to recall in the past).

The two I'm thinking of are also "mushy," one is from the 70s, the other from early 80s, both are narratives expressing how the drive of these 'working men' keeps them from being with the ones they love, missing them, having to keep saying goodbye, separation; but at the same time the strong drive and work it takes to become a "superstar." Actually, it seemed the 70s had MANY songs with that theme running thru them! But these 2 came to my mind and even if they aren't what you're looking for, it may help jar your memory of your impression of the song.....or what the song DOESN'T have in it! Usually it works that way for me anyway. Here they are:

    Beth I hear you calling
But I can't come home right now
Me and the boys are playing
And we just can't find the sound

    Just a few more hours
And I'll be right home to you
I think I hear them calling
Oh Beth what can I do
    Beth what can I do

You say you feel so empty
That our house just ain't our home
    I'm always somewhere else
    And you're always there alone

    Just a few more hours
And I'll be right home to you
I think I hear them calling
Oh Beth what can I do
    Beth what can I do

    Beth I know you're lonely
And I hope you'll be alright
'Cause me and the boys will be playing all night

    Song: FAITHFULLY
    Artist: Journey
    Album: Frontiers - 1983

    Highway run
    Into the midnight sun
    Wheels go round and round
    You're on my mind
    Restless hearts
    Sleep alone tonight
    Sending all my love
    Along the wire

    They say that the road
Ain't no place to start a family
    Right down the line
    It's been you and me
    And lovin' a music man
Ain't always what it's supposed to be
Oh, girl, you stand by me
    I'm forever yours
    Faithfully

    Circus life
    Under the big top world
    We all need the clowns
    To make us smile
    Through space and time
    Always another show
    Wondering where I am
    Lost without you

    And being apart
Ain't easy on this love affair
Two strangers learn to fall in love again
I get the joy of rediscovering you
Oh, girl, you stand by me
    I'm forever yours
    Faithfully

    Whooa, oh-oh-ooh
    Whooa, oh-oh-ooh, oh
    Whooa, oh-oh-oh, oh-whoooooa-oh
    Faithfully
    I'm still yours

    I'm forever yours
    Ever yours
    Faithfully
