I visited my dentist as promised (That's where I heard this song, if you remember). That was no help other than they thought maybe the singer sounded a little like Carole King. They have the song in question on an MP3 memory card. Trouble is, there's about 4 weeks of music on it. They'll keep a lookout.

That is close! The flavor is right, tempo a little fast. I like this song; the strings and brass are nice. Is that a banjo or a mando behind the vocalists most of the time?

My wild guess is "These Are The Days" by Natalie Merchant

No you're getting pretty far afield. Think of a voice more like Melanie Safka.

To state the obvious, I am assuming that you are familiar with and have eliminated Melanie's other hit songs like "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" and "The Nickel Song".

I don't remember very many Melanie songs and the mystery song sounded very familiar. I do like the Nickle Song but haven't heard it before. It is a little more light-hearted than what I'm looking for. The temp's right. They mystery song is more of a torch song; there are no other vocalists either.

GOT IT! Found it on my own.
"Between the Lines" by Janis Ian from the album with the same name. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocvXsRTp9MU
