    KAIN-TUCK-EE
    (Dark and Bloody
    Hunting Ground)

    The Great Spirit made beauty
    Breathing life abundant
    Mighty hooves that shook
    Our hunting ground

    Meadows heaved with life
    Beating, running, and strong
    Our hearts were lifted
    Hills chanted our songs

    Brown bear and eagle
    Mammoth beast and small
    Roamed the land together
    For the good of all

    The moon spills down
    And cliffs guard over
    Lifeblood that flows
    Through the Mighty River

    When the white tribe came
    Proving not our brothers
    They robbed and raped
    Our hunting ground

    The bodies pile high
    Taller than the trees
    A river of blood
    Flowing through the leaves

    Now the land is still
    No more buffalo thunder
    Dark and red
    Is our hunting ground

    The moon spills down
    And cliffs guard over
    The blood that flows
    Like mighty rivers

    Dark and red
    Is our hunting ground
    Dark and red
    Is our hunting ground

Beautiful and meaningful poem. It is slightly reminiscent of Soldier Blue by Buffy Sainte Marie

This reminds of Joni Mitchell's style. When you are compared to Joni,it just don't get better than that!incredibly deep, with a mood that is chilling.....in a good way!Oh,and the last verse......chillingly true!

Peter, thanks so much for your comment. You introduced a new "old" song to me that I'd never heard before! Went straight to YouTube to hear "Soldier Blue"! I can hear the slight reminiscence to which you refer, although I am not "reminiscent" of it (not knowing it!) I've heard of Buffy Saint Marie, but am not that familiar with her music. Will try some others. Thank you!

Wow. You guys are putting me in some pretty good company here. Joni is great. Thank you, Doug.

I woke up with this refrain in my head:

    The moon spills down
    And cliffs guard over
    ... the Mighty River ...

and had to make a song about my Mother State.

You don't post song lyrics too often......but when you do.....it's a doozy!

The unspeakable and unforgotten crimes against the tribes of Indians have found a little place of consolation
put into words by you, Frankie.
Consolation, because you, as a born and bred American from Kentucky are fullingly willing to admit these crimes.
Though it won't change any of the facts, it still means something.
Far too many Americans are still too proud to bow their heads deeply. You do.
Thank you, FrankieAt the same time you draw a great picture of Kentucky, of which you are so fond.
I understand it now even better!

Beautiful Frankie, you seem to be able to make effective lyrics as well! This had me thinking all day to be honest, to which I want to show you this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DyaQXeDq2o I've been thinking on something similar as well. Native stories has always captured me since childhood.

Thank you, Eccer. That you say, "this had me thinking all day," . . . is the highest of compliments.

The song and movie from YouTube was also new to me. Thank you for sharing it. So many programs I don't watch because they still reflect the "history as told by Caucasian America's point of view." However, I have read some very good books, nonfiction and fiction, that reflect truth a bit more accurately.

May all the dead souls rest in peace until they are once again gathered together and breathed life once more, into an Earth renewed.
