Could it be "Una Paloma Blanca"? :

When the sun shines on the mountain
And the night is on the run
    It's a new day
    It's a new way
And I fly up to the sun

I can feel the morning sunlight
I can smell the new-mown hay
I can hear God's voice is calling
For my golden sky light way

    Una paloma blanca
I'm just a bird in the sky
    Una paloma blanca
    Over the mountains I fly
No one can take my freedom away

Once I had my share of losing
for they locked me on a chain
Yes they tried to break my power
oh I still can feel the pain

    Una paloma blanca
I'm just a bird in the sky
    Una paloma blanca
    Over the mountains I fly
No one can take my freedom away

    Una paloma blanca
I'm just a bird in the sky
    Una paloma blanca
    Over the mountains I fly
No one can take my freedom away

    Written by Johannes Bowens.
Recorded by George Baker Selection (1975).

in the early 1970's, i remember a song on the radio, albeit for a brief period, that i truly enjoyed. I only today, some 30+ years later learned the song to be "Una Paloma Blanca". I seem only able to find poorly produced Spanish language versions on the internet. The version i knew and liked circa 1972 or so, not to sound provincial, was sung in English and was briefly on the pop charts. Does anyone know who sang this?

As Sandy noted above, the 1976 hit version was by the George Baker Selection, probably better known for its other hit, "Little Green Bag."

Bobby Vinton also recorded it, perhaps a little earlier than George Baker. I remember him singng it on his syndicated TV show of the time.
