Ident request

My mother has been looking for a song for years, with no luck. She remembers it got airplay on the adult contemporary radio station she likes back before 2002, and it's theme was 'if I knew then what I know now'. She initially thought the male vocalist was Rod Stewart, but I've gone over his entire discography with her and had no luck at all. She does not know for certain if Rod Stewart was the artist, but the singer must have a similar style/voice if it wasn't him.
The song really spoke to her when she heard it after Dad died in 2002, and I would really like to get the CD for her this Xmas. I know what info I have doesn't give you much to go on, but if anyone could help, I'd be very grateful. Thanks in advance,
