The "Black Crowes" made me remember something:

    http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/b...ns/75bands.jpg

There are 75 music groups represented (caricatured) in that ^ image. Like for example, those big jets flying over the scene are American B-52 bombers... > The B-52's

Trying to find all 75 bands, or even half of 'em, is a great way to waste a whole weekend. Ask me how I know.

PS: The image was created in 2006, so forget any artists that became well known after then.

Edit #2: Maybe the image should be the basis for a new thread... "Name the Music Artists In This Pic!"?
    _____________

EDIT #3. The total number of bands is either 75, 72, or 70. The only "solution" I can find now contains 70. But when I first came across this thing 2-3 years ago, the OP said there were 72. But the title of the graphic says 75. So... ..... I dunno .....

If anybody can come up with a final count of 75, please let us know.

    Default "Old Hippie"

Gotta be fast to keep up with this thread!

All this Ballad stuff made me think of a lyric... "He's an old hippie and he don't know what to do"... Had to google it to place the song. The following is "Country & Western", bordering on Country Rock (they are a cross-over band), but not quite Rock 'n' Roll. But it is a ballad about an old Rocker, and it is very much about the music. And other things.

1985, #2 in the USA and #1 in Canada. Wind of Change is a 'worldview' ballad. This one is purely personal.

NB: In the video there's a storm coming up. It gets a little "interesting" at the end.

    He turned 35 last Sunday
In his hair he found some gray
But he still ain't changed his lifestyle
He likes it better the old way
So he grows a little garden
In the back yard by the fence
    He's consuming what he's growing
    Nowadays in self-defense
He gets out there in the twilight zone sometimes
When it just don't make no sense

He gets off on Country music
    'Cause Disco left him cold
He's got young friends into New Wave
But he's just too friggin' old
And he dreams at night of Woodstock
And the day John Lennon died
How the music made him happy
And the silence made him cry
Well he thinks of John sometimes
And he has to wonder why.

    'Cause he's an old hippie
And he don't know what to do
Should he hang on to the old
Should he grab on to the new
    He's an old hippie
This new life is just a bust
He ain't tryin' to change nobody
He's just tryin' real hard to adjust.

He was sure back in the sixties
    That everyone was hip
Then they sent him off to Vietnam
    On his senior trip
And they forced him to become a man
While he was still a boy
And behind each wave of tragedy
    He waited for the joy
Now this world may change around him
But he just can't change no more.

    'Cause he's an old hippie
And he don't know what to do
Should he hang on to the old
Should he grab on to the new
    He's an old hippie
This new life is just a bust
He ain't tryin' to change nobody
He's just tryin' real hard to adjust.

Well he stays away a lot now
From the parties and the clubs
And he's thinking while he's jogging 'round
Sure is glad he quit the hard drugs
    'Cause him and his kind
    Get more endangered every day
    And pretty soon the species
Will just up and fade away
Like the smoke from that torpedo
    Just up and fade away.

    Yeah he's an old hippie
And he don't know what to do
Should he hang on to the old
Should he grab on to the new
    He's an old hippie
This new life is just a bust
He ain't tryin' to change nobody
He's just tryin' real hard to adjust.
Yeah he ain't tryin' to change nobody

Another history lesson. This is where I put on my Casey Kasem voice... or **** Clark? .... Nah, I'll go with Wolfman Jack...

The clips below represent my rationale for including Swing and Western Swing in the history of Rock music. By some opinions, Western Swing led the way to Big Band Swing, but I'm sure that's an arguable point. At any rate, the most perennially popular Western Swing band in America was Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. And the Bob Wills 'boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. So there ya go.

Following Bob Wills by a couple of decades were these guys, led by the rich baritone voice of Ray Benson.

    1990:

    CORE!!

But you know, everyone loves Rock music in one form or another, and doesn't it follow that almost anything can be made to fit really well?....and it goes without saying that even a lot of the greatest symphony orchestras all over the world (and so on) have plugged into Rock and in many cases made the genre even better by taking the music to another level.

    Lyrics correction:
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost you can't see.

you're welcome and yea I thought that even if the bagpipes didn't make the grade then the visual context would carry it through

Heard this on the 80's station on the way home today. Wikipedia lists his principal genre as Pop rock, blues rock and blue-eyed soul. Never heard that one before
