Ακούστε τώρα την ιστορία του Κεμάλ
ενός νεαρού πρίγκηπα, της ανατολής
απόγονου του Σεβάχ του θαλασσινού,
που πίστεψε πως θ' αλλάξει τον κόσμο.
αλλά πικρές οι βουλές του Αλλάχ
και σκοτεινές οι ψυχές των ανθρώπων.

Στης Ανατολής τα μέρη μια φορά και ένα καιρό
ήταν άδειο το κεμέρι, μουχλιασμένο το νερό
στη Μοσσούλη, στη Βασσόρα, στην παλιά τη χουρμαδιά
πικραμένα κλαίνε τώρα της ερήμου τα παιδιά.

Κι ενας νέος από σόι και γενιά βασιλική
αγροικάει το μοιρολόι και τραβάει κατά 'κεί.
τον κοιτάν οι Βεδουίνοι με ματιά λυπητερή
κι όρκο στον Αλλάχ τους δίνει, πως θ' αλλάξουν οι καιροί.

Σαν ακούσαν οι αρχόντοι του παιδιού την αφοβιά
ξεκινάν με λύκου δόντι και με λιονταριού προβιά
απ' τον Τίγρη στον Ευφράτη, κι απ' τη γη στον ουρανό
κυνηγάν τον αποστάτη να τον πιάσουν ζωντανό.

Πέφτουν πάνω του τα στίφη, σαν ακράτητα σκυλιά
και τον πάνε στο χαλίφη να του βάλει την θηλειά
μαύρο μέλι μαύρο γάλα ήπιε εκείνο το πρωί
πριν αφήσει στην κρεμάλα τη στερνή του την πνοή.

Με δύο γέρικες καμήλες μ' ένα κόκκινο φαρί
στου παράδεισου τις πύλες ο προφήτης καρτερεί.
πάνε τώρα χέρι χέρι κι είναι γύρω συννεφιά
μα της Δαμασκού τ' αστέρι τους κρατούσε συντροφιά.

Σ' ένα μήνα σ' ένα χρόνο βλέπουν μπρός τους τον Αλλάχ
που απ' τον ψηλό του θρόνο λέει στον άμυαλο Σεβάχ:
«νικημένο μου ξεφτέρι δεν αλλάζουν οι καιροί,
με φωτιά και με μαχαίρι πάντα ο κόσμος προχωρεί»

Καληνύχτα Κεμάλ, αυτός ο κόσμος δε θα αλλάξει ποτέ

and a young lad, of (noble) breed and royal lineage

"realized" the lament and headed for "there"
τον κοιτάν οι Βεδουίνοι με ματιά λυπητερή

and (an) "oath" to Allah, (the lad) gives them, that "times will be achanging"

Σαν ακούσαν οι αρχόντοι του παιδιού την αφοβιά

as soon as the "lords" heard, of the lad's "fearlessness"
ξεκινάν με λύκου δόντι και με λιονταριού προβιά
/ xekinan me likou donti ke me liontariou provia
"commence", with (the) wolf's "tooth" amd with (the) lion's "hide"
απ' τον Τίγρη στον Ευφράτη, κι απ' τη γη στον ουρανό
/ ap' ton Tiyri ston Efrati, ki ap' ti yi ston ourano
from "Tiger" (river) to "Eyphrates" (river), and from the earth to the sky
κυνηγάν τον αποστάτη να τον πιάσουν ζωντανό
/ kinigan ton apostati, na ton piasoun zontano
(the "lords") "hunt-down" the "defector", (so as) to "catch" him "alive"

Πέφτουν πάνω του τα στίφη, σαν ακράτητα σκυλιά
/ peftoun pano tou ta stifi, san akratita skilia
the "hords", "fall upon" him, like "unrestrained" (furious) dogs
και τον πάνε στο χαλίφη να του βάλει την θηλειά
/ ke ton pane sto halifi, na tou vali ti thilia
and take him to the "khalif", to "put the noose" (around his neck)
μαύρο μέλι, μαύρο γάλα ήπιε 'κείνο το πρωί
/ mavro meli, mavro gala ipie 'kino to proi
black honey, black milk, (the lad) drank that morning
πριν αφήσει στην κρεμάλα τη στερνή του την πνοή

but, the star of Damaskus, was "keeping" (the prophet and the lad) "company"

Σ' ένα μήνα σ' ένα χρόνο βλέπουν μπρός τους τον Αλλάχ
/ s' ena mina, s' ena hrono, vlepoun mpros tous ton Allah
in a month's (time), in a year's (time), (the prophet and the lad) "see" before them, Allah
που απ' τον ψηλό του θρόνο λέει στον άμυαλο Σεβάχ:

that, from his "high" throne, "says" to "senseless" Sinbad :

On a different note interesting that you also say Hellas and Kypros, a lot closer than Greece and Cyprus.

Yeah, that's a question that I can only answer by speculation on the basis of some people liking to change things. We ought to have a bit of a variety. We do call your country Νορβηγία which more or less means "the North way", a bit close to the Old Norse term Norðvegr, meaning the same thing? Languages...

and the "word" for ... "Copper" ... is also so ... ... ...


"Copper" being the "metal" ... "originating" ... from Cyprus ... in the "ancient times" ... ... ...

There always will be variety... to some extend.. Vikings named us the North way. I didn't know that it actually meant something in Greek too..

That's right... but not pronounced the same way. We say Kypros here, only difference s that you pronounce it with an "i"..

About the copper... That was something new In Norwegian it is the same... (kopper).

As for the pronounciation, you should hear Greeks trying to pronounce certain vowels or consonants (I do that as well, well now I don't because I don't dare pronounce it) in Norsk like O versus Ø, æ versus å , and the consonants if someone has West coast accent Hi, hi, hi! That's fun!
