My research points me towards a George Jones' song called "Your Smiling Face" but I can not find a copy of the lyrics to verify if they match yours.

    The Gambler
    (Dobbyn / Warren / Guy / Kinney)
    from "Cool Bananas"

Ah- this is a story of gamblin' n' lyin'
    'n cheatin' and burnin'
    n' rootin' n' shootin' n' tootin' n' elecrocutin'
    Yep

I am a liar- A liar and a cheat- I got a lie up my sleeve
I'm gonna lie to ya- I'm gonna cheat on ya
    You deserve everything you get
Wanna be a liar- A liar and a cheatin' man
    N-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n- I wanna be- I wanna be a liar
    A successful man
    N-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n- Oh baby

Roll the dice- I am a gambler- A gambler and a cheat
I got a card up my sleeve
Gun under table- Gun on the top
What's the difference?- I'm gonna kill you

I wanna be a gambler- Gambler with a leading hand
    N-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n- I wanna be- I wanna be a gambler
    A successful man
    N-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n- Oh baby

Cards are always stacked your way
But the cards are always stacked your way
It seems the dice they always roll your way
The cards are always stacked your way- Yup

Wannabe- I wanna be a gambler- A gambler with a leading hand
N-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n- Wanna be- I wanna be a liar
    A successful man
    N-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n- Gotta be
I gotta be the gambler- A gambler with a leading hand
N-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n- Wanna be- I wanna be the gambler
A gambler with a leading hand
Ace of spades- That's my card

Hope its of some use to you

Smile That's the song Mumbles, but

I do recognise that you have found the song that I was thinking of, by the lyrics.
I do not think that was the original band, whose name I would remember. A gnutella search is only returning the Kenny Rogers song of the same name, so far.

Thanks very much for your help.

I found the info HERE go to "music" on the left, maybe something might ring a bell

EDIT: I've just had another look and this version is from 1982 so it may well have been done by a different artist. I keep coming up with Kenny Rogers too

Mumbles, now you're just teasing me. I still don't know how you found that website. I cannot get there or to the website with the lyrics for "The Gambler" without googling "The Gambler" and "Cool Bananas" simultaneously (which were not clues provided by DavidTangye). You've got me convinced you have some kind of magic diving rod for lyrics. Oh well, everyone has their secrets.

When I googled the names "Dobbyn / Warren / Guy / Kinney", I got a New Zealand group called DD Smash which released the "Cool Bananas" album. However, this band wasn't formed until 1981. Check out the link for more info on this group:
    DD Smash: Information from Answers.com

The groups Eddie Boy, Reo Speedwagon and Dirty Tricks released songs titled "The Gambler" in the mid-seventies.

Oh my gosh, here I am back after 18 months. I note that you have connected Dobbyn etc to DD Smash. I am a New Zealander by birth, and indeed recognise Dave Dobbyn and DD Smash. I am sure that is the song I was after. Of course now I need to hunt through NZ to find someone that would have a copy of the song. It might not be online anywhere.

Anyway you guys have answered my question. Thanks a million. If I get a copy I shall happily get it to you. Just email me at gmail: thanks again, DavidTangye
